72 Chevelle Resto
« on: May 14, 2019, 07:14:17 PM »
In 2017 I picked up this one owner SS Chevelle from OH. The owner is a friend of the family. I'm doing all the resto except the motor and trans.
The car is a numbers matching 350, 4 speed, bench seat car.
It was in storage for 25+ years until I took it on. Prior to that it was a daily driver OH winters and all.
Soooo here we go the condition which I picked it up.

Sourced a good refurbished frame.  The original was rotted in half literally.
DSCF0476 by gary BECK, on Flickr

pulled it all from storage to assemble it enough for transport from OH to my place in TX.

Made it home.

Doors, glass, fenders hood, grill.... Geez, you basically built the whole car to move it! That had to take some serious time. Nice looking car.

The assembly for transport was one or two days.  the front clip went on as one piece.  Hood, deck lid bolted on. the rest got tossed inside the car.  This thing rotted from the inside out. It was undercoated yearly that helped save it but all the joints where sheet metal is spot welded began to rot severely. Paint looks nice but very deceiving. The rear quarters have been replaced once already with GM parts. I found a blue GM Parts sticker still hanging on inside.  The floor and trunk pan have multiple patches in them too.

Check out the rust holes in the seem under the rear seat to trunk pan.20190505_123806 by gary BECK, on Flickr

Cut out the trunk pan.

I have a complete trunk pan to go in and the inner/outer wheel wells arrived today.

I noticed the section in the firewall after the fact, but then was like well if that's it then it's not so bad and could've been from leaking heater core.  Guess one of those looks is deceiving, hopefully everything under the paint is ok.

Woo new wheel wells!

A 72 Chevelle is hard to beat; a classic body style.  My sister had a plain Jane 72 and my friend had a forest green 70; both were really nice cars.  A stroked 383 or 400 would be my choice and still numbers matching!

Lots of undercoating in here. There was previous work done to repair rust.

20190518_171154 by gary BECK, on Flickr

And there's the old weld seam from the repair.
I'm gonna cut it out and use the new wheel tubs to make things look and smell new again.
The outer wheel tub had been replaced so only the front and rear bottom sections rusted out.  The rest of it looks solid so I'll probably cut out the rust and use the new outer wheel well as a patch piece.

passenger side inner quarter was rotted at the floor attachment point.

20190522_194454 by gary BECK, on Flickr

Made a nice little repair piece from sheet metal.

20190522_183146 by gary BECK, on Flickr

Some hammer and dolly work and the patch fits pretty good. Not welded yet still fitting things.

20190522_194602 by gary BECK, on Flickr

And this is where things are today.
Complete trunk pan with braces, both drop offs and the inner wheel well installed for fitment only. Its just sitting in there.
The repop pieces are fitting very nicely. Im gonna use some self taping sheetmetal screws and tac weld here and there after I make some more repairs.

One more thing. This is the divider panel behind the rear seat.  The bottom edge was rotted. Nobody makes this piece so I'm repairing the original.  Lots of small bends and curves to reproduce. It's an integral part of the trunk and floor pan. They all three are spot welded together on the bottom of this one panel.  The bottom of the panel is on the left side of the pic, I started making repairs already.
