4th gen vs. 05-06 GTO
« on: March 31, 2019, 07:07:29 PM »
One of the boys is looking for a fun rear wheel drive v8. I'm looking for opinions/comparisons between a 4th gen and 04-06 GTO. 04 GTO is equipped with the 350 which would be a better comparison but if I was to get a GTO I think 05-06 with 400 would be a better option.

What do you all think? I prefer a Firebird but the GTO's would be more of a collector's car/higher future value.

I've built three wrecked GTOs in the 05-06 range, two 6 speeds and an auto with magnacharger.  Parted out a couple of 04s. They are a very soft car, doesn't take much to total one. Frame rails cut like butter with a dull sawzall blade. They were really designed for the v6 motor, the front suspension just doesn't keep up my opinion. They are a lot of fun to drive though, plenty of power.  I like the seats, whole interior really was decent.  My main complaints were the crap front suspension and the tip of the frame style doors always getting me in the ribs entering.  That and they weren't the prettiest cars...

One more thing, the old 05/06 cars are def thr better deal. The 6.0 makes better power, it has the upgraded 4l65e transmission, have thicker rear axles and stubs, better brakes, and a whole different electronic system thats a big improvement over the 04.  Plus the dual exhaust rear bumper, can't believe they ever made one with the single exhaust pipe, as if they weren't ugly enough already.

Old Chicken,

Posted a lot of good info there, I agree with your assessment.  Howerver the early GTO exhaust system you mention is not a single exhaust system, it's a true dual exhaust system with two separate mufflers.  It gives the false appearance of being a single exhaust system since its two pipes exit on the same side of the rear of the car.  Here's a picture of the stock exhaust system when viewing underneath the GTO:

Jack,

Here's my take, The 2004-2005 Pontiac GTO is a fine performance car but as Old Chicken mentioned it's generally a softer car than the 4th gen Trans Am.  Generally the Pontiac GTO is a faster than even the best 4th generation the WS6 LS1 1998-2002 Trans Am. The 5.7 liter LS1 V8 powered GTO was rated at 350 horsepower and the 6.0 liter LS2 was rated at 400 horsepower. The GTO is a great commuter car with an extremely comfortable interior and a good ride quality.  The 4th Generation Trans Am on the other hand is a much better handler and its interior is not as comfortable.  The 4th generation Trans Am (especially the LS1 WS6) makes for a better all around performance car with great acceleration, handling and braking.  Whereas the GTO doesn't have the handling of the LS1 WS6 Trans Am but it's got better ride quality especially on bumpy or uneven pavement. The GTO has an independent rear suspension versus the 4th generation Trans Am's solid rear axle setup. The GTO is more refined and slightly more powerful where the Trans Am is more of pure driver's car.  If I had to pick the GTO would be a great getting around town commuter car and the 4th generation Trans Am would be better for weekend duty and driving it on a nice windy country road.

Thanks for the replies, we ended up getting/finding an 05 GTO in good shape for a good price. To my surprise it seems that more GTO's are available but a lot were in rough shape. WS6 TA's on the other hand were in good shape but more expensive.

Congratulations, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it. You'll want to make sure the fuel line isn't rubbing on the driver side fuel rail cover, and the wiring behind the glove box isn't rubbing on the dash reinforcement.  Those two have caused a lot of burned goats. Pics!
