No power steering unless rev engine
« on: March 10, 2019, 09:35:29 AM »
Stock LS1 power steering pump with aftermarket Al reservoir. . New/reman gen 3 power steering box 2.5 turn.

When the car is idling, I have no power assist. If I rev the engine to ~2000 RPM,  I have assist.

Any thought where to start?

The belt isn't slipping, incorrect profile or worn tensioner?

Do you have the hoses hooked up in the correct direction?

Thanks. Belt is not slipping.

Hoses are different sizes so cannot invert them.

Can you get a gauge on the high pressure line from the pump to the steering box?

My first guess is that the pump isn't generating enough pressure.

My second guess is that there is something wrong with the steering box or that the pair (pump/steering box) are mismatched.

But these are just guesses - you can either throw parts at it or diagnose properly with gauges.

How long has it been hooked up? It took a while for mine to bleed the air out. I just kept turning the wheel, lock to lock. If it's been hooked up and working for a while then then it sounds like the pump went.

Not long. Pretty sure all the air is out though. It makes a whining sound when there is air and it doesn’t now.

I’m leaning toward bad pump. Spoke to turn one and they thought the pressure valve is prob stuck.

Looks like I will be replacing the pump.

Apparently the valve was stuck, and broke free and fixed itself.

All good now.  Get lucky every now and then, hopefully will not reoccur.
