Newbie!
« on: March 05, 2019, 03:37:17 PM »
Hello All!
I have been perusing your pages for some time and finally thought I'd join the group. I've always been a Pontiac fanatic. My first car was a 1972 GTO. Since then, I've owned a 77 Firebird Esprit, a 77 Formula, a 78 DKM T/A #127 and a 79 Formula. I still have the 79, which I bought in 2000 from a family member, who bought the car new. It was in need of a full resto when I bought it and we are FINALLY getting around to it... It sat for 19 years OUTSIDE in northern AZ, so needless to say, it is going to take quite a few duckets to get her back into shape. Unfortunately, it is a 403 car... :-(
The engine is sitting in my garage now and the rest of the car is in CA, in my brothers garage. He has a lift and a LOT more room to do the work. Last weekend we bought a new front sub-frame to build up and when the rest of the car is ready, we'll load the motor into it and roll it all under the car as a unit.
I've read a lot about building the 403 and will be moving in that direction, with the help of Dick Miller at Dick Miller Racing and Lynn Welfringer at Mondello. I really want to keep the original 4A heads but am being led in other directions of course. Any ideas, thoughts, and or experience on the matter would of course be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to anyone who chimes in!

Welcome to TAC, if the 403 needs a lot of work my advice would be to get a 400 instead.

Regards, Jack

I think the original heads were known for cracking so I'd probably take their advise.

Thank you, Everyone!
We did consider changing out the engine to a 400, however, being that this is a numbers matching car, the decision was made to keep the 403.  The head swap to 350 heads was also considered and would ultimately be more cost effective, BUT, the 4A number on the heads is readily visible when simply looking at the engine. So... the 403 heads will stay. I'll post some pics of the car as it progresses and will start a new "restoration" thread as suggested by Roadking77.
