Which Stereo is which?
« on: January 08, 2019, 01:33:03 AM »
Howdy gang,

Does anyone have a comprehensive guide to match an RPO code to what a stereo actually looks like? Do they have codes on the physical devices? The previous owner of my Y84 reckons he found the original deck so I just wanna confirm what they look like. I've also come across one for sale for a decent price that I could maybe put back in the F/A. I don't really have a concrete idea on the difference between a "UM2 DELCO-GM AM&FM ST RAD&ST 8 TAPE PLAYER" and "UN3 DELCO-GM AM&FM ST RAD&CASSETTE TAPE" are besides that one has 8-Tracks and one has Cassette Tapes. Do they physically look different? My two 79's have each code respectively, do they look the same or are they totally different? Also to try and cover all bases, what was the stereo/radio options available for the 70-76 cars?

Thanks!

I can't tell you all you want to know. I can tell you that the 8 track radio looks different from the cassette radio. Below is a pic of an original 79 Delco am/fm cassette radio. You can see the cassette radio has a separate cassette shaped door for the tape, with a separate radio dial. The 8 track's dial face is larger and the dial face is the actual door for the 8 track. The dial face would flip inward and up as you inserted the 8 track.

On this 79 cassette radio, the left push button says "stop" and "eject" and the right button is "fast forward". I think these were the same radio from 78 to 80 or 81. Sometime in the early 80's they added "rewind" to these cassette radios. Other than the "rewind" added to the buttons, the appearance and size continued to be the same into the 80's, up thru around 1988. So, the 80's radios will also fit perfectly into the 78-81 Trans Ams, and look the same, other than the rewind function added to the buttons.

The 70-77 radios have smaller sized faces than the 78-81 radios. So, the radio hole in the dash of 70-77's is a different size from the 78-81 radio dash holes. So, the radios aren't interchangeable between the early type and later type.

There's a Delco radio options listing in the 1979 Dealers Manual. I've sent you the 78 version in msgr.
My 1979 Dealers Manual is incomplete in regards to that option page.

First to admit Im lazy on searching, but it would be nice to have a thread with pics of all the different radio types used. Similar to the thread with the different types of shakers.

If you know the serial number and or part number you can google search some websites that decode the radio.

No idea what the serial is or where to find it, the cover is a bit rusty. Thought I found something that was a GM part number but didn't work out. The other car doesn't have it's radio so wasn't sure exactly which was which. I was given a '78 accessories booklet that illustrated every radio and their respective RPO codes thanks to a certain guy with a Formula that will be finished soon.  8-)
