78-81 Armrests how do they attach??
« on: January 06, 2019, 08:35:44 AM »
I have a Camaro but I figure this would apply to Firebird since they used the same style door panels and armests on the later cars...so I am hoping someone could help

The door shells on my 71 Camaro are hybrids off a later (maybe 76) car. I thought the car these shells came off of had the deluxe panels with large armrest pull originally as I still have the old door panels in storage. (been a while).

Anyway, when I finished the car I put 70-71 style door panels on it and used the 71 style armrest brackets that screwed right in place with no issues.

Now I want to change things up a bit and am putting 78-81 style door panels on it with the large pull and can't see how the armrest will screw in?? The two mounting holes in the armrest are at an angle on the lower section and there's no hole in the upper part of the door near the latch for the upper part of the pull.

I feel like I am missing something? Anyone have their car apart or know how these large armrests attach to the door? There's not another bracket that needs to be there is there?

Or does the armrest screw right into the metal of the door with no extra brackets involved?

Thanks in advance

They just screw to the sheet metal. And your door already has the dimples in the metal where the holes should go, indicated in the pic below. I'll check on the size of the screws in a minute.

The screws are 3/16" sheet metal screws with phillips pan head, 1.5" long.

Those door armrests are notorious for pulling out at the front pull screw. There's a repair kit that I recommend using, even on new armrests to prevent the problem from happening. It reinforces the screw hole in the armrest with a metal sleeve so the armrest pull doesn't pull off of the screw head. Like this kit on eBay:   https://www.ebay.com/itm/Corvette-NEW-Armrest-Repair-Kit-1978-1982/153149826047?fits=Year%3A1979%7CModel%3ACorvette&hash=item23a870e3ff:g:LbkAAOSwRhVbfefk:rk:1:pf:0

You're welcome. Remember that you'd need 2 kits to do both armrests.

I recommend using the repair kit even for perfect new armrests, the steel tube sleeve strengthens that whole area. I didn't use the side grub screws, the sleeve was enough. Great pics, Steve.
