Can't Spin the Tires :-(
« on: December 04, 2018, 09:21:49 PM »
I love my car.  Had it 5 months now.  You know, when you want to pull away and are looking to make some noise in front of your friends?

It's depressing when your black 77 TA W72 auto with full dual Magna-flow exhaust and 3.23 gears can't spin the tires at will.   :-/

I know, I know, it's only got 200 or so horsepower.  Still depressing!

200hp and a 3.23 rear end should be able to spin first gear at a least part of the way. Sounds like the engine is not performing as it should. My 74 with a th400 and 3.08 rear gears would do it easily without any engine mods.

I believe the technique is called a "brake torque".    Could always carry some sand around and spread it near the rear wheels just before you leave. :-D

I'm sure there are other ways to coax a squeal out of it.

Use both feet, step on the brake and rev the engine to about 1200 rpms, release the brakes and floor the gas pedal.

Yes, if I want to do a burn out, I will dump some water on the ground while no one is looking, then peel out.  :-). I will have to get a cooler or something for the trunk

That's ridiculous.  My 96 Blazer with a 4.3L V6 and an ailing 700r4 can do burnouts.

My TA, otoh, has a worked 400 and at the time, had a functioning TH350 with a 3.23 rear.  It smoked the tires a little too easily.

Great!  What should I look at first.  Timing?

I just changed spark plugs which made a world of difference for hot and cold starting.

Trans was rebuilt already.

Could install "line lock" for a little over a hundred dollars. Then you apply brakes, hit line lock button & hold, release brakes and the line lock holds the front brakes clamped while you apply power to get wheels spinning. Release line lock button to allow forward motion immediately if you don't want people to know you have it or sit & fry tires into a cloud of smoke!

When mine was a stock L78 with 2:41 it would spin the tires no problem. The only thing done was trues exhaust (no cat), long tube headers, recurved the Dist, and a good tune. With 3:23 you should have no issue.

I agree a stock ish pontiac 400 that is running good should do a burn out of some sort with a 3.23 rear gear in a TA.

How does it run otherwise... at idle, down the road, through acceleration to about 4K rpm.

Thanks Guys.  It's an original unmolested car.  The only tune related thing I have done is spark plugs, and adjusted the choke.  Car starts, runs, drives great.  It accelerates without missing or hesitation.  I was going to look at plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, and adjust timing next.

choose a nice safe spot
accelerate from standstill to a point about 1/4 mile down the road
note mph at this point
increase timing 1 degree and repeat
if mph increases repeat until maximum and then remove 1 degree
if mph decreases remove 1 degree and repeat
any sign of pinging back it off and try again with higher octane fuel

Anyone have any tuning suggestions?

Get a Moroso curve kit for it and swap out the weights and springs and set full mechanical advance at 36 degrees.  A stock 77 400 has pretty low compression so you should probably be able to use the lightest springs without detonation.

Yes! I was adjusting the oem distributor, springs, weights etc. and was chasing my tail with trial & error.
I sent them my engine/drivetrain info and they curved a new one accordingly.
My engine is not stock so it made a world of difference with the new distributor!

Yes, it's depressing that these cars look the goods but are pathetic in power. So enjoy driving it instead of cheap thrills. Paint chips are expensive.

Add a few more degrees intial to the timing, rejet the carb, go with 1 or 2 jets larger, open the scoop or buy one that's already open and use a good high flow air cleaner, put dual exhaust on the car with no cats. You shouldn't have a problem spinning the tires.

i think power braking is a fake burnout.  gas pedal only and you get what you get.  don't like doing burnouts anyways, just cruise.

Check for rust in/on the dizzy weights. Make sure your gettimg all your timing in. Clean, replace the springs but KEEP the Factory weighs. Use one heavy and one meduim spring, this should get your all timing in around 3-3500k. Set initial for 12-18*

Check make sure throttle blades are full open when peddle is to the floor,  stock 200hp 400s with DK mods ran low 14s with their tune.
Any Pontiac with 3.23 gears should have no problem lighting up the back tires.
Is the trans slipping?

Next would be a compression check.

What size of tire?

I just ordered dist cap, rotor, wires and will take it all apart next week and look at timing.  Trans rebuilt, not slipping.  Compression good.  Tires brand new 235/60/15.
