What color primer was original on the bottom of your car? And what year is your car and what assembly plant was it built in?

There's some debate as to whether the Van Nuys plant used a different color primer than the Norwood plant. So, hopefully many of you will reply, so we can see how the colors were for the plants and the years. Thanks!

I'll start: I have 4 79's, 2 Norwood and 2 Van Nuys. All have black primer underneath.

I have a Norwood 77, red primer, 79 (I think its Norwood) black. I was under the impression that red primer was used up to 1979 when they switched to black primer.

I was also thinking that 78 and older were red, and 79-81 black, regardless of the plant they were built in. But someone somewhere else claims the plant makes a difference in some years. So, I wanted to survey our members to see if we can see a pattern and determine the whole story is. Thanks for your contribution!

Thanks for the replies so far.

Curious that there's no Van Nuys cars reporting yet  .

Have never seen anything other than what was reported. 70-78 red, 79-81 black. When was the change, not sure.

March '78 Van Nuys red primer, tinged brown. Under the body, throughout the body, cabin and trunk.

I used to think the same as you, that the primer color difference only depended on the year. I thought that 70-78 is red/brown, regardless of assembly plant, and then they all went to black from 79-81. But, somebody else was claiming that the Van Nuys plant cars had black oxide primer and the Norwood cars had the red/brown primer, so it depended on the plant. This claim was really made about the 70-78's, since we know that all 79-81's are black. I questioned whether all 70-78 Van Nuys cars were black though, since I didn't think they were.

So far, from this survey I'm taking, I've counted 4 78 Van Nuys cars, including yours, having the red/brown. So, that shows that not all 70-78 Van Nuys were black, since 4 Van Nuys 78's with red have been reported (I also asked the question at PY). But, I haven't gotten any replies from 70-77 Van Nuys cars to see how many of them were black or red. So, still waiting on them.

1978 TA (Built in october 77) Van nuys Ca,  Brown color randomly and thinly sprayed on everything under the car, not red oxide or black. There was a lot of undercoating slopped on all over the place.  My primer under the original paint color of goldenrod yellow was a brown color like the picture Aus78Formulas picture below.

This is the cleaned up and coated surface after rust converter.

this is under the car before applying any treatment

This is the trans tunnel which you can see is brown.

March '78 Van Nuys.
This is the interior which is the same as the undersides. The Hardware red/orange oxide primer is there as a comparison.
My under floor panels, above fuel tank etc is same as Boosted's above, minus the deadener coating.

I have a 70 Firebird I am working on its bottom side is original and its Black? I have no idea what Plant built it.
I took some pics of original undercoating and removed the undercoating and Its Black!

I do know its on of the first 800 hundred or so that were built from the Vin number if I am was interpreting the sequence number correctly?
I have not bothered to break down all the numbers on it its just a plain Jane Esprit low option basic firebird I am building a custom TA clone out of it.
I will get some pics

You need to down-size your pics, since your post is nearly unviewable as it is. But I was able to see your VIN. The L indicates Los Angeles, so yours would have been from the Van Nuys plant. From this research I was doing, it appears that the early 70's Van Nuys cars had black primer on the bottom. So, that seem right for your car.
