Seat Suggestion for Big Guy
« on: October 18, 2018, 01:55:51 PM »
I’m 6-5, 250, and I have huge legs. Im basically straddling my steering wheel and the car isn’t exactly fun to drive. What is the best possible aftermarket seat I can get for my 1980 Firebird?

Dont know how the aftermarket seats sit, but im pretty sure I have seen seat track extenders that move the seat further back. This may help a bit. The stock seats are actually pretty low to the floor already with the tracks, though the seat may be a bit thick. I dont know if the recarros sit lower or not.

The other thing would be to find some newer model seats that recline.

I'm 6-2 which is obviously less than 6-5. But it would still be nice to have some seats that recline for a little extra headroom. Any suggestions for some seats that will fit a second gen without major surgery?

The guys that did the swaps may chime in but I know one guy put some late model gto seats in that looked really good, another put seats from a Nissan z car I believe. They turned out very nice as well.

A reclining seat can create less leg room, T-tops if your Stetson is rubbing the roof lining.

OK, I'll ask... how do reclining seats reduce legroom. I'm 6'3" and have to recline the seats in a lot of cars just to straighten my neck. Never noticed a change in legroom when I tilt the seat. .  Am I missing something?

6'4" here. Moved the driver seat back about 3".
Bolted to the floor, that's all.

I didn't say neck room. It depends how you are squashed into the base of the seat or not and if you are bending your back half way up to fit and drive. If you haven't noticed then it probably doesn't apply in that instance.

I have a set of these, there's several out there, but have not used yet, my car has no interior so not reached the point where I decided if I need them.

I may be remembering wrong but didn't folks swap in 3rd gen seats. I think they are reclining... I could be completely off as my poor memory is horrible...

There was a rare reclining option for 2nd gen Camaro but really only added a second fixed setting.

Just move the driver seat back. No other mods necessary.

I'm 6'6" and 285, and have the seat all the way back in my 79 TA.  Seems to work fine, since I was 18 (or I just got used to it), plus I have extra headroom with the T-Tops.  But, if there was a way to raise the seat or extend it back an inch or two, that would be great for a population that is getting taller and bigger.

Ended up going with seat extenders off EBay that supposedly give 1.5- 2 inches back. I’ll let you know how it turns out. I also took the sagging headliner out months ago. I couldn’t believe how much more Head room I had and I actually love how the cieling looks.

Just remove the front seat and sit in the back, like in Police Academy!   :P

2 inch seat extension was a GM accesory, but I am not at all sure what cars the dealers were allowed to use it on.  I forget how I found out about it.
