T-Top looseness
« on: October 26, 2011, 04:37:43 AM »
Goodmorning,

I have a 1979 T/A with T-tops. There seems to be some looseness when I press up and down on the glass from inside, and a little rattling. I took the tops off and noticed the slots on the glass frame are much larger than the tabs that they slide into on the car's roof. Is there supposed to be a spring or tab of some kind inside the glass frame, and if so, can they be replaced, or even found these days?

Thanks....one more thing to the list.

Todd

There are supposed to be some plastic grommets inserted into the slots in the t-top frames, which provides some cushion and a tighter fit. The resto parts dealers have them. I looked them up at www.amesperf.com and they call them retainer grommets with part #FH519 for $2.50 each.

If the slots in your t-top trim have become damaged and wallowed out, they also have some repair parts to restore the fit, part #FH520.

You can also adjust the t-top mounting blocks in about every direction to get the handle sides nice and tight too.

I pretty sure you guys are talking about the Hurst? Fisher T-tops are both metal where the slide into each other on the inner part of the roof. I just bought all the parts for my Fisher T-tops from fbodywarehouse.

This is an old thread but no, they are the Fisher tops. There is supposed to be plastic insert pieces on the metal frame where the stainless tab insets. If those are gone then the frame gets buggered up and you have to use those repair clips to make them tight again.

Yes, like FormTA said, they are for Fishers. And the above information is still correct, except that the grommets now cost $7.00 each, and it takes 4.

That's still obscene for 2cents worth of plastic.

Not sure what grommets youre talking about, but good luck. No C n C parts are available. May find something used. We should start a support group, LOL. ( I have them too)

If you're on Facebook, there's a guy on Trans Am Lovers!!!! that is talking about reproducing the rubber for the C&C tops, and he seems to know a lot about them. If you go to that group, you might can find the conversation about it. I don't know if I can link to it, but see if this works:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/2482041630/permalink/10155549542471631/

I think there are supposed to be plastic grommets in the two holes on top of the metal frame where the glass keepers stick in, right?

Rec'd mine this week.  They are made of soft flexible plastic.  After looking more closely at the holes before the install I found two of them with cracks. So I ordered the repair kit.  $22 plus shipping at most places.  Some advertise $32 and "free" shipping but as we all know that doesn't happen.
