W72 1979 10th Anniversary 400 4 speed
« on: October 02, 2018, 01:32:56 AM »
Hi! I'm new here and equally new to Trans Am ownership. Always wanted a 77-79 TA. I drove a 79' 403 Auto once back in 83'. Of course I loved it and kinda held that memory for over 35 yrs.

Skip forward to today. Other then reading I really had no experience driving or owning a TA. I found my 79' about 2 hrs from me on Craigslist. Love at first site. Everything I read is that the 400 4 speed is a much more desirable drivetrain. Way more collectable also. I drove a 5 speed Acura back in the 90's so I knew how to drive a stick.........its just been a while.

I took it for a test ride local and LOVED the sound of the exhaust. Car drove great locally. After it was bought I had to drive 2 hours home on I 95 South. Here's the issue:

In 4th gear at 80 MPH it was like 3300-3500 RPM! I really wished I had a 5 speed! Is this normal? Around town in 4th gear at 40-50 its around 1800-2000 RPM. But try to drive past 70 it starts revving a bit. The Gas was being engulfed. Is this normal to have such bad drivability at highway speeds? Thanks........God what a great exhaust note!!

It all depends on what gear ratio you have. Could be very normal.

I have a 78 fourspeed with the stock WS6 ratio, nearly same RPM at 80 mph like yours. Highway driving is not so much fun, but climbing curvy hill streets makes a lot more fun and smile in the face  :D

These cars suck on the highway.  A cheap route for decent highway rpm is to dial back the rear gear to 2.73-3.08.

5spd is the next best in terms of cost vs gain.

6spd is great but very expensive all said and done.

My advice is change the gear ratio in rear. A TATA with a 400/4speed is a low numbers production car. I agree however about the high RPM's when on the highway. I drive mine locally and I love it for that.

Thanks alot for the answers! Im not going to change anything , its a low production combo and i have alot of original documented info for the car. I just never drove one and wanted to make sure it was the norm.  If i do travel on the highway ill just have to keep it around 70....the speed limit. Never thought id be driving the speed limit in it......... .

While it may be low production, those that were produced are nearly all identical.

you should have 3.23 gears so your symptoms are normal.  just try to stay around 65-70 and all is good.
