Very cool progress

I am also curious how the wheel will hold up as I have similar thoughts between getting it wrapped or fixing what I have. Time will tell I guess

Started to work on door panels, heres a few shots in no particular order. I cleaned them up with household cleaner, cleaned the carpet with soap and water, then carpet cleaner. I have to say it came out pretty good. I did get new backer board and have it cut to fit. Now I am on the hunt for an upholsterer to sew the carpet bottom back to the backer board.2020-09-06_12-13-49 by Kerry Grubb, on Flickr

Top rail of the pass side was just about deteriorated beyond repair. It was broken in at least 4 spots, every time I touched, it would break. I fibreglassed the entire thing, came out good and solid. This one will work fine now.

Kerry,

Amazing transformation on the door panels. Looking at what you started with, wouldn’t have thought it was possible to get such good results.

Great job on the door panels! Replacement ones are not cheap for the TATA’s and  those look real decent. I think it’s pretty great you can make many original parts look new again.

The vinyl and carpet on those door cards look great! Nice job.  I tried to save mine, but couldn't do it. The driver side was damaged at the rear top edge to the point of no repair.  The grain had worn off the top side and there was dirt so ground in no amount of scrubbing I could muster would get it out.  That's awesome you were able to restore these.  Congrats!

They wont be perfect, and depending on how the end result is I may just end up getting repops in the end. But I plan on using these for now. The biggest thing that bugs me about restoring this car is the fact that the original carpet is no longer made. The repro door panels just dont look right to me with the short nap product as opposed to the 'shag'. I have a couple of feelers out looking for replacement carpet but no luck yet. Gonna try to get to an upholstery shop this afternoon to see if he can put these back together.
Last resort I will go to my carpet guy (carpenter coming out in me ) and see if there is a home product that is close.

My shag carpet is yellowing and just needs replacing.  Is there any high quality carpet that is the TATA color and I could just put that on the door cards?  Or carpet that would match the repro door cards?

Good job on the panel cleanup.

Bob, I am still on the hunt for original style and colour carpet. I will let you know if I find anything. The repro door panels have the short nap carpet that matches the repro carpet made today. It is the same as all other trans am carpet but only silver. If your door panels arent that bad I would try to clean them first. The ones I had were sitting in a barn for years and were quite nasty. I know they are worse than yours could have ever been. I scrubbed mine with soap and water, then after that dried I used a heavy duty carpet cleaner and a stiff brush. I used my shop vac to suck up the mess. BE CAREFUL, too much wetness and the carpet backer will separate at the map pocket and the carpet will tear. Ask me how I know!!

The door carpet is sewn through the heavy door card backer, I am on the hunt now for a shop that can do that task for me.

Another possibility is to re dye the carpet.

My door panels are pretty good, I have one area about 2" in diameter where I spilled some solvent and it is lighter.  Also some yellowing at the edges.  Maybe I could dye both of those things?

If you ever find the carpet let me know.  How do you dye them?  The carpet has rust marks and general yellowing but no major wear areas.

Thanks for the info.

I will have to check back through my notes on dying the carpet. At one time there was a fellow on here getting rid of a light blue carpet. I was going to take it and dye it silver so I looked up to see if it was possible, which I found that theoretically it its. As far as the door panels, Mine were extremely worn and yellowed/brown along the top rail. I suppose from uv rays, and dirty arms laying on them with the window open. I bought what I thought were the 2 closest silvers from SEM. Neither worked  I got some rustoleum  silver paint and used that. I top coated with SEM satin clear coat. I figured what the heck, I had nothing to loose. They came out perfect if I say so myself. I did a test of the colours on the back seat that I have for colour matching. I also went over the bird embroidery with some red paint to brighten that up a bit. Pics to follow.

This is what I used to re-colour. A bit unorthodox but it worked pretty good and the match was spot on.

I hit the red highlights with some red paint and a toothpick. The threading was coming a bit unraveled so I had to be extra carefull.

After someone made this suggestion in another thread here, I go this stuff off of ebay. I used it to re do the chrome piping. It worked really well. Again, not perfect but looks much better than what I started with and I have all of $45 into these at this point. I found an upholster pretty close that said he should be able to do the stitching for me but needs to look at them in person. Hopefully I can find some time in the next few days to get them to him.

Thanks for the suggestion Johnny Ace. It worked perfect. Almost like gold leafing. The good part about it, the more you rub it into place the shinier it gets. Gonna try it on my door latch cups next.
