Between yesterday afternoon and this afternoon I got some painting done. Got the fender in 2k primer on top of the epoxy, got the inside of the door painted, got the driver side jamb and cowell area painted, and I got the dark grey painted on the top of the car as well as the rear bumper. Also I got a dr. side mirror in the mail yesterday and got it painted as well.

I need to re-group and develop my next plan of action. Top priority is to start the repairs to the dash, and take off the dr. inner fender and get it painted. My thinking for the moment is to get the dr door installed, then get the car turned around to take off the pass side sheet metal (door and fender) as well as the front end. It would be nice to have the entire car painted before the end of next month, but that is wishful thinking at this point!

Started the patchwork on the dash. Overall it wasn't too bad ( I have seen worse), this was after the first coat of filler. I sanded that down when it was dry and put a second coat on. Ran out of filler material, hoping to find some at Carlisle this week, if not I will place an order for some more. In the mean time I guess I will get the inner fender off, and maybe start to work on the cowell top. I was hoping to save the paint on the metal dash front, but it wasn't good enough and I had to make a small patch in the corner. Now the challenge of finding a matching paint colour.

My A.D.D. has me bouncing all over the place. One of my faults. I get too many things started at one time. BUT, I like to think of it as getting one part repaired whilst another is in the waiting stage. Dash is an example. I can work on something else while the putty is drying over night. My short term goal is to get the dr side finished up and ready for paint, then I can turn the car around and work on the pass side. My wife calls me 'The King of Half A$$', because I start another project before I finish the one im working on.

Dash after about 2 coats of filler. This has been sanded with 80gr. I had to order more material, supposed to be here tomorrow. Maybe 1 or 2 more light coats then this will be finished.

Fender looks great! Love those rust free parts. I was lucky I bought a set 20 years ago that were from Florida or California and had them shipped here. They were cheap back then so I just stored them. I just stocked up on sand paper and ordered a replacement longer Dura-Block sanding block. Fun times...

Thanks for the good updates, they are motivational.

I was hoping to have pics of my finished dash, but I sanded through the filler in a couple of spots on the final go round. No big deal, im glad I found the soft spot then as opposed to after it was done. I just added some more, now I need to sand it back off and hopefully be done with that part. I look at a car restoration as a finite number of parts that need to be addressed. Each one I finish is one step closer to being done!

Looking good, dash fit is something I am struggling with, I noticed with yours, where it lines up against the cowl, it's not a consistent gap. Is that how they came from the factory? Mine is noticeable in a few spots and its bugging me.  I am on the fence with either pulling mine back out and adding more "welded' plastic to close the gap or saying to heck with it and ordering an after market from OER (they are 1/2 price of just dashes).

What would you do?

That is pretty much the quality of GM fitment.  Once the windshield is in you will barely notice it. On a side not, they never have the OER dash. I've been on a waiting list for over 5 years now... Also, the radio area is for the early years not 79 up. Not sure what year car you have.

What Form said. I took the dash out of my 77 when I redid it and it looks about the same as far as fitment goes. At that joint the dash is a good bit thicker than the metal that it clips to, so they dont really align perfectly smooth. WWID, it depends on how 'bad' it really is. I am a perfectionist, but after a while I even throw in the towel and to quote Jack Nicholson, 'that's as good as it gets'. On this car I did not want to go through the trouble of removing the dash, which IMO is a pain in the ….

Dash is done. Finished the last coat of padded dash filler, sanded smooth starting with 80gr through and finishing with 220gr. Then I used SEM texture coating, I put on a couple of coats holding the can fairly high to give it a bit more texture. After that was dry I used SEM grey, then topped with SEM low lustre clear coat. All in all it came out pretty nice. I am happy enough with the results, time to move on to the next project with this car.

Im trying to figure out now what colour to paint the metal dash. I have somewhat matched it to my Sherwin Williams samples and will try to match that to what is readily available. I would like to use something off the shelf spray bomb but will get something mixed if need be. Hopefully will be getting some more work done this week.
