Roadkings TATA (4 speed)
« on: September 24, 2018, 07:44:15 AM »
Just a teaser.  I have been waiting patiently to start the resto on my latest acquisition, Tenth Anniv. 4 speed. I got this car by chance last December after the tenth I was working on was destroyed in a fire. I was cruising local CL and found the car somewhat close to me. Not really looking to get another, it was complete (partially disassembled) with matching motor and trans., and a price I couldn't refuse. At least that's the logic I used. It has been sitting in my friends barn since December waiting for my new shop to be completed. Fast forward, or maybe slow forward to now and my shop is complete enough to get the car moved in. Plan on doing that on Thursday this week then the games begin.

Check in next week, same bat time, same bat channel!

Sounds like you have some work to do Kerry!

For the pictures, look at the IMG code when you click on the arrow on the bottom right of the picture. I think the tab you need to go to is the BCC tab.

Thanks for the tip Ryan, I thought that's what I was doing but I couldn't get the image to copy. It seems to be working now. Car looks rough, but its actually about 100% better condition than my 77 was. Also enough parts thrown in to build about 3 cars! Should be a fairly simple strip and paint, then put back together. It would be nice to have it done for its 40th birthday next year and a trip to the nats! That's the goal Im shooting for anyway.

Haha, I was thinking the same thing this year for my car's 50th! That honestly has been a huge motivator for me. Although when I told my wife she looked at me like I was completely nuts... At least I'm not the only one haha

Congratulations, a TATA 4sp is a rare car.  It comes with an XX block too.

On Flickr, there is an up and right arrow on the photo page that makes a pop up window with a link that you can paste into your TA Country page.  I always edit it to remove my name and put the photo title at the bottom of the photo.

Also, if you need any stock type TATA parts, let me know because I have a lot of them.

Well, as promised Thursday is here an I finally got my car home. It has been parked in my friends barn since last winter. He has a pretty nice 4 wd farm car/Polaris type thing with a winch on the front. He was going to winch the car up on my trailer, but when we got there this morning I couldn't find him. So we did it the old fashioned way with a couple of come a-longs. Slow but it worked pretty good. Unloading was a bit more tricky, as I didn't want it to go too fast off the ramps and end up against a tree! Nestled nicely in the new shop waiting for my tear down. I got an 8 pack of led shop lights off of amazon and plan on getting them up tomorrow. I have a cabinet I need to build in the kitchen for my wife before I start the car though. Hoping to get that taken care of this weekend.

I think you may have bought the same shop lights. I bought to 8 packs. If they are the same size ones the seem to be really good for the money. Nice to see you got it home.

Got the lights up plenty bright. In the 8 pack they came out to something like $18 a light. When I bought them by the piece at Lowes for my garage they were over $40 ea. Got the cabinet started in the kitchen (my wife laid down the law when she saw the car in the garage!), should finish it up today or tomorrow evening.

Found the key and got the trunk open. It was crammed full as well as the interior. Got everything cleaned out. Lots of extra stuff, tons of window channel, spoiler ends, trim parts, couple of sets of seats, and found the a/c box that was missing.

I still have a couple boxes of parts in my garage as well as the steering column and a spare one. Biggest thing that was missing were the mirror t tops. I found a real nice set from a guy on PY forum though. Biggest shocker is the pass. quarter has been replaced. There was a bunch of crap in the trunk when I picked it up and didn't see it. I was more concerned with the floors and frame. Doesn't make any diff, I still would have bought it, its just gonna be a bit more work back there than I thought. It looks really good on the outside but I can see a lap joint and pop rivets on the inside where it was replaced. I know I cant live with it like this. Also in the parts is a real nice dash bezel. Its wrapped in plastic right now but it doesn't look like engine turning in the swirls, almost looks like a checkered pattern. Would make a nice piece for a driver and I will sell it.

grand am, sorry just saw your question. I have no idea how to post a link. I got the lights from amazon, they are 4' sealed units that have a plug on one end so they can daisy chain. They were sold in an 8 pack for something like $150. If you search led shop lights tons of stuff will come up, from singles to 10 packs, etc.

Right now I just have temp elect hooked up and no heat, but its starting to get cold so I need to start thinking about that.
I plan on trying to sell some of the stuff, I wont need it and dont see any sense in stockpiling stuff at this point. Anything extra I can get will go a long way towards the resto. When I did my 77 I only used 'found money' to do the job. Money from side jobs, scrap, etc. One of the reasons it took so long. I would like to dive into this one head first and get it done as quickly as possible though.

Started sanding. Took the deck lid off, theres a soft spot under one hinge that will need repaired, but the rest of the metal is very nice. No rust spots at all. I made an executive decision to leave the quarter panel that has been replaced alone. They actually did a pretty good job on the install, probably as good or better than i could do so i will leave it and clean the inside exposed edge up a bit. Found some original markings under the spoiler.
Question for those that have sanded down an original, did they use an orange/yellowish primer under the silver? There are several coats of primer on this car and the O/Y stuff is near the bottom. When i sanded the deck lid under the spoiler there was only silver and the O/Y stuff, no black. I am thinking this area  is original and untouched. You can see it in the last pic.

RK, just need the tach, I would take the cluster if you don't want to separate. I picked a tack up from cl, looks the same from the front but everything on the back side is different, don't want to chop up my car to make it work, if you want to work something out let me know. Thanks

79gt, I am in the process of moving stuff from my current shop into the new shop. I will see if I can find the box with the gauge cluster and post some pics in the next couple of days.

I have been picking away slowly, I have most of the body sanded and just about ready for primer. One of the trunk hinge pockets was completely rusted through. I repaired that this past weekend, I will post the pics once I get them downloaded.
