Cursed with windshield wiper motors...
« on: September 11, 2018, 12:39:52 AM »
Not sure what I am doing wrong, but I have had the worst luck with wiper motors. On my 71 I had removed the wiper motor and re installed a few weeks later. I went to check it and would not work. I heard the clicking noise when I turned the switch in , but no movement. The motor was getting warm, so I turned it off and disconnected the wire. I looked it over double checked it tried again, and same issue. I think think motor is burned out or jammmed or both.  I’m pretty sure I have the wiring set up right, just not sure why it has stopped working.
Any thoughts or ideas?
Thanks,
Jim

Did you try turning the wiper motor on without the hardware hooked up? Is something preventing the wiper mechanism from moving freely jamming the motor?
Did you do any work on the motor itself? Looks like something somewhere didn't go back together correctly or as you said.  I took my motor apart and clean out the old
grease for new.  Wasn't hard.

Got it figured out today the mechanical pump was binding the wiper motor. Fixed and working fine. I replaced the mechanical pump with an electrical one which will work for now.

Jim, how was it binding? and what did you do to fix it? the only way my 71 pump works is by turning the wipers on first.

Good Deal. I was hoping for you that is what not burned out. I would imagine those things are pretty durable and would last awhile. I just cleaned and painted mine, and hoped for the best when I hooked it back up, and it worked fine. Not much use over the years unless the car came from the northwest.

The earlier years had the pump integrated within the wiper motor, whereas the later years had the pump as part of the canister. I find the motors without the pump to be trouble free and work forever, whereas the ones with the pump fail. I'm hoping to find more info about the earlier year ones.

They went back to that at the end, also.  The pump went back on the wiper motor for pulse wipers in 78, and I think it was everything in 79 or 80, but maybe I remember wrong.  Those pumps are really pretty complicated and they take a lot of force to operate.

All that stuff is cam operated, and you'd have to get it put together right, but it seems like if the wipers are parked any interference should just work itself out.

The 78-81's have the pump integrated with the wiper motor, whether the motor has delay or not. 75-77's and maybe a few 78's(without delay) had the pump in the washer fluid container. Early 70's I can't say.

The cam for the washer pump integrates with the wiper motor via a solenoid. Honestly I did not want to take the time yesterday to troubleshoot further. So I had an electric replacement I had used originally on the wiper motor on my Lemans. It works and functions very well although it looks stock but the outlets for the hoses are different. It all works well now and that was my concern. Later on I plan to readdress this issue with the mechanical pump and re install it later. Right now it all functions as it should , thankfully! :)
