window sweeps
« on: August 30, 2018, 08:14:56 PM »
I am going to be in the market for the long strips of padding that jam between the outer door from of our car doors and the window glass. I just had my car painted and the old ones that I took off look pretty shot. I see some for like 70 a piece through places like classic industries and I see some for like 70 per set on ebay. I'm wondering how little I need to spend to get good ones and do they come with hardware to put them on.

I believe you can still get the OEM sweeps.  Well worth the extra dollars.  The OER sweeps, the ones with the 1/8 SS bead, do not have the correct curve above the door handle.  Some make relieve cuts' but that only bunches up the sweep in the area.

The outer door sweeps are something that you dont want to skimp on. Good ones are out there and like you have found you will pay a premium, but they are worth it. Look through the links just posted, you need to be sure to get the correct ones. There is a bit of confusion when ordering them. FYI, if at some time you are planning on getting new int. door panels, the 'assembled' panels come with a new inner sweep attached.

You have to be sure to get the correct sweeps for your car too. There are 2 types for a Firebird/TA. There are sweeps for a car with standard trim. The standard trim sweeps have a small round stainless bead attached to them. Then there are sweeps for a car with the "decor" option. The decor sweeps don't have the stainless bead.

Here's a link that shows the difference between a standard trim TA and a decor trimmed TA:  http://transamcountry.com/community/index.php?topic=79274.msg753972#msg753972

I suppose that it would be stupid to re-use my original ones?

You said in your original post that your old ones were "pretty shot". So, it would not be a good idea to re-use them. The old ones get hard, crack up and break apart, so while you're working on it, you may as well install new ones. Then they'll be good for many years to come. With your new paint, it will look so much better with new ones.

Absolutely...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-GM-1970-1981-Camaro-Door-Window-Sweeps-Mouldings/372391596381?epid=671641755&hash=item56b444d15d:g:R6wAAOSw441bZmOp

They have gotten pricey. Look around.  I think I paid $140 for the pair 2 years ago.  After I got them I found them a little cheaper.

+1 on the aftermarket ones being complete garbage.  I have them still on mine and need to replace them.  For lack of a better term they basically get sucked into the top of the door...almost going inside out.

Those NOS ones sure are pricey now.

Has anyone tried these ones from Firebird Central?  They apparently are a new design that's supposed to replicate the OEM better.

I didn't try FC.  I did try Year One, AM-Auto Parts and 1A Auto.  All had the same outer sweeps.  1A Auto were the only ones that had the correct inner sweeps.  All the others mentioned had rubber sweeps that were 1/8 to 3/16 shorter.  So I keep the inners and boxed up the outers.  Also, that little 90 degree bend is bent in such a way that it rubs on the paint.  You and bend it away from the door skin or cut it off and file smooth.

FYI GMPartsGiant.com has both of the OEM outer sweeps for $63 + shipping.  Just ordered a pair - will let you know how it goes.

Does your car have the standard trim or the decor trim?

As far as I know, the doors for all second gen cars are the same. The window sweep should be the same for all years. The big thing you need to know is weather or not you have the extra chrome trim bead.
That is a great price, I will have to get a set ordered asap.

It'll help to have the GM part numbers.

The numbers for the standard sweeps with the small round stainless bead on them are: 9612538 and 9612539
For the decor sweeps, which don't have a bead on them: 9612540 and 9612541.

much thanks to everyone who participated in this thread. I tried to order the parts on that site however their catalog didn't list anything for a Pontiac older than 1982. Then grand am posted up the part numbers for those sweeps and I was then able to use their search function to find the parts and order them. I hope that they come out as being the correct parts!

Sorry wasn't on TAC all weekend.  The parts I ordered were 9612538 and 9612539.

You're all correct that the GMPartsGiant site only goes back to 1982 on their vehicle selector.  I had to search for the individual parts.

I was advised today that my parts will ship out on 9/10 as they had to order them.  Good news is that they still seem to be produced.  I'll let you know if everything turns out ok.

I cancelled my order with them because they wanted me to cancel my order and pay through pay pal. Something to do with the fact that they didn’t have my billing address on file.

Go to gmpartsdirect.com instead then. They have them for $60.71 each, plus shipping of course. That's where I bought mine a few years ago. I've bought a number of parts from them and no problems.

You sure you are reading the price correctly? I just looked at gmpd again a few minutes ago, and they still say $60.71 each, as I posted yesterday.

I suggest taking one of your old screws to an Ace hardware or a NAPA auto parts store and find some screws that are similar to the old screw. That's what I did. The ones I used were zinc plated, so after installation, I painted the heads of the screws with some black paint so they didn't stand out.

Not correct but they cant be seen, I used some self tapping screws about #6, maybe 1/4" long. I buy them bulk, their use if for putting metal studs together in the building industry. I hit them with some silver paint to help prevent rust. Black would've been better, but like I say, they are not really visible.
GrandAm, that is odd. I am 99% sure on the price I posted. I thought it was odd because the day before when I did a search looking for the parts on your advice gmpartdirect came up first, so I put the numbers in. The price was at $60. Then I went to gmpartgiant and they were something like $62. SO, when I went to order yesterday I went to 'direct' and was surprised to see the price was at $67. I went back to 'giant' and they were still the same, that's why I ordered there.
I could have read it wrong, I have done stranger things, but being the conspiracy theorist I am, I wouldn't be surprised if the pricing didn't fluctuate relative to my search engines.

Had a bit of a weird experience with Giant - initially they charged me $11 to ship the 2 sweeps.  Then I got notice yesterday that they needed another $12 to ship the package with FedEx due to the weight (1lb) and dimensions of the package.  I accepted the charge to avoid the hassle - and I can see my sweeps should be here Monday.

Seems odd to me that they wouldn’t have their shipping figured out on a part that’s only been around for 40 years.  Perhaps they just don’t sell these often?

I did order a set of interior door handles at the same time and I received those in 48 hours without issue other than the boxes looking about 30+ years old:-)

FYI received the window sweeps from GMPartsGiant and they arrived in absolutely perfect condition.  They did arrive in a box the size of one of my house doors.

I ordered the wrong interior door handles from them on the same order and they handled the return very pleasantly.  The lady I interacted with was super nice and helpful.

So overall I’m happy with my experience with them.
