You are right and it's not worth it, it's one thing cutting down a 6" dead tree but it's best to leave jobs like this to the professionals. They are insured and know what they are doing.
So back to the deck (more so outdoor living). Yesterday it was windy and one corner of the tarp gave away, so today while I was on the roof I had a idea that I need to research some more.

How about installing (more correctly resting) 2x6x12' on top of the roof on 16" centers (like a pergola) and attaching the tarp to it, I think it would look nice and provide support to the waterproof sun sail (looks like a canopy) it would provide protection from rain and bugs. I would take the tarp down in the winter as no tarp can handle New England snow load.
The only question is how do I secure the 12' TP to the roof without compromising my roof?
