I thought the L stood for Lacquer paint,
2C - is build date   Feb(2nd month) 3 week (A-1st, B-2nd, C 3rd etc)
CC1- is t tops
Y85 - is special edition
11L, 11U - is paint code Which i assume 11 is white,
I think these are correct from the top of my head, not sure of the rest without looking into more info, but i know someone will come up with the rest. Some of the guys here are very knowledgable and know this stuff inside out.
BTW, welcome to TAC. You need a flickr or PB account to post pics here. Once you get it figured out its pretty simple.

L is for  lacquer but I read somewhere pacecars had water based . Idk , another question is the 2FS87 states Firebird , shouldn’t it be  2FSX ? Hopefully someone will chime in before I commit to this car that I only have a verbal agreement with . Needs a lot of sheet metal work ,he won’t go lower than 6k . It has 69k all original numbers matching  miles .

Not sure about the pace cars but f bodies were built in Norwood Ohio, and Van Nuys Cal. I think the Norwood cars were still getting lacquer and but the Van Nuys cars were water based. I would think its a fair assumption that they made these models at both plants so either paint may be good.                                                                                                                       For a pace car it should be - 2x87TANxxxxxx
2=Pontiac
X=Series-Turbo Indy Pace Car
87=Body style (coupe)
T= Engine code (301 turbo)
A=Model Year (1980)
N=Assembly plant (Norwood)
xxxxxxx= Sequence Number
 I will correct myself on the trim tag, I think the build date is 04D (April 4th week), 80 is the year, 2fs87 is the body style, N I believe is for Norwood,111383 is a unit number that I am led to believe has to do with the production but has little meaning for anything else at this point, not sure what the 2c is, I believe the other numbers have to do with interior trim.

Looks to me like its a pace car. No idea of what you mean by "needs a lot of sheet metal work", but keep in mind unless you plan on doing the work yourself, metal work welding panels can get expensive. Also, depending on the interior, these types of cars are expensive to restore. This may give you a bit of negotiating room.

Congrats on getting the car. I am a sucker for punishment and think they all should be saved. My 77 probably should have been sent to the crusher. Dont judge the forum by the lack of response. There are many knowledgable and decent guys and gals on here that will offer lots of help. Sometimes a question of topic gets lost, other times guys just dont know the answers, and there are times when after something is answered guys just wont chime in. You need to have a photo account with something like flikr or photobucket (though I think they charge money now) to post pics. Go into the lobby section and introduce yourself and your new project. Im sure will get some responses!

I am not sure if anybody mentioned it, but the first L is for Lower.  L and U Lower and Upper.  Both white.  It would have made sense on the pace car to code the gray on the trim tag, but as you can see they didn't.

The 1980 pace cars had very unusual interior and they used interior code 12C.  In your example 2C is the interior.  The date code is 04D, late april.

X in the VIN is specifically pace cars.  The so-named black "special edition" was not VIN coded.

I figure we all know that, but there was incorrect information about this published 20 years ago and it has been copied.  I am not sure who started it, but I suspect John Gunnell.

Thank you all . The car is still in storage and will remain for a while . I did find out that Richard Rawlings was interested in the car the day before I bought it but he didn’t want to take the chance on driving all the way to Jersey if it wasn’t running , but it is .
