1980 Automatic Console
« on: January 04, 2019, 08:41:22 AM »
Hello, Looking for some info. I bought an automatic trans console from a 1980 Turbo Trans Am. The owner of the car told me that it had a factory installed CB Radio in it. I noticed that it had different brackets on it where the black plastic "cubby hole insert" would normally be installed. I found that a "cubby hole insert" from a different Firebird/ Trans Am  console that I had would not fit. Therefor the question is, Is this console specific to a car with a CB Radio, or specific to a 1980 Firebird/Trans Am?  Thank You   Tom

1980 Turbo Trans Ams, and possibly any other 1980 Firebird with electronics spark control, used a specific console.  Instead of a map pocket, there was a 1980-only block off plate there.  The console itself is just a little bit different.  They were still using map pockets in 1980 so I am a little fuzzy on how they did that.  There were no factory installed console radios in 1980.  1977 was the last year.  For an 8 track, they definitely added a 2nd bracket inside the 1977 console, but I never had a CB one to look at.

I'll look for a picture.  1981 also has a unique console, and none of them are exactly the same as a Camaro console.

After thinking it over, I think a map pocket should still fit an original turbo console if the extra bracket is removed.

I did find a picture from below, here: http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/transam-carpet.cfm

After some further study and memory, I remember that the blockoff plate for 1980 had fingers on both sides and mounted to the sides.  There is a steel bracket in there made for that, with slots on either side, and I can see where that might narrow it down to where the map pocket would not fit.  The map pocket attaches to the top bracket with screws, and so that bracket should be there no matter what.

I just found a picture on Franks Pontiac Parts that verifies what you are telling me. It looks like a 1980 console is a one year only. 1981 being different from the 1980 due to the computer hiding under the front of it.  Thank You for this info.  Tom

If you have the 1980 style electronic spark control, then the 1981 has 2 computers.  Most cars that year just had one that did everything.  The 1980 computers were running spark advance and looking at a knock sensor. That was standard equipment on 1980 trans ams, but there seem to be quite a few out there with delete-option engines.
