How to tell if you have exhaust leak
« on: June 01, 2018, 05:03:20 PM »
Quick question, might be an obvious one. How can I tell if my headers are leaking at the manifold?

With a 3 foot section of 5/8" or 3/4" inch Heater hose use as a Stethoscope.
Hold one end of the hose up to your ear.
Go around each header primary tube where the headers gasket is.
A powerful exhaust pulse will be heard when you find the Exhaust leak.

I would have said that you should be able to see it but obviously you can't and that's why you posted.

Did the stethoscope trick work?

Sorry for taking so long to reply. I couldn't see any leaks even looking from underneath. I tried the stethoscope idea, and ya I think I located a small leak. You can tell by the sound change.
I think it's a very small leak so I'm not messing with it. Once I get some money I think I'm going to change out the headers to a better pair. I think the better the quality the less noise, maybe I'm wrong, I'll have to do some research.

Another way you can find Header Leaks is using a Shop Vac. With the engine shut off and cold, you can attach the vacuum hose to the exhaust pipe, turn it on and then go up and listen at the engine. You can hear the air sucking past the bad gaskets. I had an exhaust leak that I tried everything and until I did this I was at a complete loss. I took a spray bottle of Windex and sprayed it on the headers..... nothing, no bubbles, but I could hear the sucking sound. It turned out to be the "Star" that gets welded into headers where the four tubes come together. If its done poorly, it will blow out and now you have one giant leak.

I can really hear stuff with a stethoscope also.  I just make one by putting a 3/32" vacuum hose directly in one ear.  Finding engine noises is really easy.  I guess I should buy a real one.

Try Remflex gaskets....great at sealing, they have a huge amount of "crush".
