dash question
« on: December 03, 2008, 07:12:55 PM »
I recently read a message in which someone made a comment about the new dashes that we are all longing for.

In the post they mentioned a difference in the dash for the 79-81 cars from the previous years.  What is the difference between them?  I was planning on sending the dash from my 77 out to be recovered, then when it comes back swapping it into the 80, and using the 80 dash in the 77.  Will this work or not.

There's a difference in the size of the area between the radio hole and the ashtray hole. If your 77 dash has the same measurement in that spot as your 80, then you're okay. Here's an eBay auction with a picture that shows where to look for the difference, complete with measurements:

Sorry, but that's good enough to stash off for later reference...

From the pictures i see the difference but would that really matter. I guess the ashtray would be a bit bigger on one and not the other? Does the dash not fit in the car becuase of that difference?

Yes it will fit in the car . You will need the ash tray from the 77 and the ash tray mounting track .
Is it fast? It has a bird on the hood don't it!

The only difference is whether or not it is "correct" for the car. The dashes are completely swappable though between 2nd gens.

Like Father, Like Son

Dad's car: 77 T/A, Original Owner, W72, 48,000 miles, not quite stock.
My car: 80 T/A, WS6, 400 w/mild work

Why not do both dashes, Frisco's got money falling out of the sky doesn't it? :P

I did some quick research(TA's for sale on eBay are a great source of info :-) ) . I see that 77's and older have the small 3/8" section. 78-81 have the 3/4" measurement.

The main different is the opening for the radio.  70-77 uses a different radio than 78-81. the two are not interchangeable.  Take a look a a radio face plate for a 70-77 and then a 78-81. The 70-77 face plate is shorter and angles in at the sides. The 78-81 opening is taller and more square

I have this radio & face plate for sale if anyone is interested. AM/FM/Casette
