Just my opinion (and it does not matter as it's your car and you will do whatever you like) but I don't like the black strips on a white car, I think if you had a dark car a darker strip would look good but not black on white.

BTW - Beautiful car, I really like the 71 vents, I wish I kept mine.

I agree - the black is too harsh.  A light gray to compliment the rims if any stripe.

I really like the gold stripe out of all of them, I think doing the fender vent in the stripe colour would also look a lot better than just leaving it white breaking up the stripe.

I'm actually thinking hard about the gold stripe now. People who know me well will guffaw at that since I've had several white and gold Oldsmobile's in the past.  The factory psychedelic reflective stripe is a must.

Hurst Olds, one of the best looking muscle cars. Not gold rims but had a lot more gold accents, on every panel to tie it in.

Phoenix Graphix sent me photos of the gold Formula stripes.  The gold is too yellow for my tastes, it looks like the same material as what was used on the 72 Hurst Olds.

Here is another thought - use the later Jack Folden "Formula" graphic:

You could mount it only on the rocker, and a gray matching the Rallys would work well.

I'll want to stay with the 71-72 stripe. I want the car to look like it would have if ordered with the stripe option.

I think that gold will look Good, especially if it is reflective, dayglo material.

Here's the difference in the Hurst Olds stripe colors.  The 69 and the 72. The 69 had a darker gold paint stripe and the 72 had reflective tape stripes that were almost butterscotch colored.  I think the Formula stripes are the same color and material as the 72 Hurst Olds stripes.

The era for the Olds decals supports that the Firebird would be similar. I think the earlier gold would be more subtle, obviously not much good when not available. Was there a silver one available? It would blend in with the white, but look darker metallic grey from different angles and match rims, perhaps.

Depends on who you believe. Tran-zam.com says there were black, silver, blue and gold stripes. Phoenix Graphix and several restoration companies say black, white, gold (some say blue). I haven't seen any gold or blue stripe photos and I've searched.  No one that I could find sells silver stripes.

Anyone have the old Dealer albums? At least in later years all those options are listed.

I haven't been able to find any of that either.  These stripes are a mystery option.

I was on the PY forum and searched for stripe info there. There is a thread with some solid info, photos from an assembly manual with a list of colors and stripes for each color.  That info says my car should have blue stripes and red ram air decals.  Very patriotic, but that doesn't really work for me.

Good find. Agreed, patriotic colours don't make for attractive cars.

Yes, just some positive reinforcement. :)

Thanks, man!   I'm dazed and confused right now on this whole stripe thing.  I'll think about it for a while.  I have a bunch of stuff lined up to do on the car before I'm ready to put stripes on it, 1/2" lowering block and urethane rear spring pads, transmission shift kit with a cast deep pan, Hurst Dual Gate shifter, distributor recurve.  When I get all that done I'll make a decision and go with it.  I sent Phoenix Graphix an email asking for info on silver and grey color stripe material; we'll see if they get back to me?

You can do your own type of stripe also - a lot of wrap shops now, this would be very easy for them...

I think after going around and around on this I'll probably just go with the black factory style stripes.  I want the car to have a factory look to it.

That does look best on a 1971.  I always like that Fender vent and the stripe really accents it.

I like the fender vents, they grow on you.  A neat one year only part and they are actually somewhat functional.

Disappointing they didn't retain them for future Formulas, it would have paid for the molds at least.

I was flipping through my 71 Firebird assembly manual looking to see how to remove my center console (didn't find anything), but I did come across specific Fomula stripe info. The color were: Blue, Gold, Black and Silver. No white.  Also, and I think this is important, there is instruction to paint the rear marker bezel and an area 0.12" around the bezel stripe color. BUT, it doesn't say anything about painting the fender louvers/vents.  There is instruction on placing the stripe around the vents but no mention of painting them.  So, from that I would say the fender vents are not painted stripe color, only the rear marker bezels.
