71-72 Formula Stripes, do you like them?
« on: December 02, 2017, 12:03:03 PM »
What's your take on the 71-72 Formula stripes?  My 71 Formula is white and it seems like a whole lotta white and I was thinking a set of black factory stripes might add some contrast to the car and break it up a bit.  But, at the same time I'm not crazy about them.  They're OK, but to me not amazing.

Do the 71 fender vents stay body color?  It seems to me they would when thinking how the stripes would have been applied by the factory on an already painted car.

Silver might be a good color to put against the white while still being subtle.

I never thought of silver as an option, hmmm. Silver would probably look great with the factory 15" Honeycomb wheels. Would that have been an available color from the factory on a white car?

x2 big fan of subtle stripes and accents on these cars, also think a less obvious choice might be worth considering, to match the rims etc or interior, or any colour if interior black.

The interior is black, so I thought black would be the obvious choice.  Silver is an interesting idea though.  The photos you posted all have the fender vents painted stripe color, I've seen photos both ways, painted stripe color and painted body color. Do you know what way it came from the factory?

Interesting.  I would have said without even checking that the fender vent was never painted to match as simply a decal option added over it and vents in fenders at time of painting. It would be easy to photoshop a pale silver/grey stripe onto your side pic.

Ben Hermance drew up a few pics for me some time ago and this one is what he came up with on a white car.  It's not really for me at this point, but it might give you another idea if you want to deviate from factory.

I agree and the pics you included are great examples BUT white is a very difficult color to keep subtle. I think going with blue like in the above pic would look best.

That's what I was thinking.  The car would be painted and the stripes added after with the stripe cutout to go around the vent.

That looks good, but I'm wanting to keep the car looking like it could have from the factory, so I would prefer the factory stripes.

I'll probably go with the black factory stripe, but haven't ruled out the silver.  Black would look good with Rallye II wheels, the silver with the Honeycombs.  So I need to decide if I want to keep the factory Honeycombs and try to keep the car looking original, or go with a set of staggered 17" Rallye II's?

The original stripes are dayglo....look very cool at night. The factory painted the fender vents and an area surrounding the vents and the rear side lights and light covers in the same colour as the stripe, then applied the stripe over that so it's all the same colour along the side.
I came very close to using the white side stripe on my 71.....very close....

I noticed the Phoenix Graphix stripes as being labeled reflective.  I've seen the vents painted and not painted, there doesn't seem to be much information on these stripes.  It would be easy enough to tape off the vents and paint them as well as the rear side marker light bezels.

The Factory Build sheets on the decal placement specified the areas painted before stripe application.....if you see one unpainted, chances are its an owner applied stripe.

I was out in the garage last night looking at the car thinking about it.  Black seems the obvious choice, it's a white car and has black interior.  But, silver is an interesting idea and has its appeal. I would like to see some factory paperwork that shows what stripe color options were available with different body colors.  I'm not against silver stripes if they were originally available with a white car.

Interesting, there's no silver listed but the car in the photo looks like it has silver stripes.  Was silver NOT a stripe color option?  Do you have any documentation that shows what color stripe can be used with which body color?

My dilemma shown with those two links.  The red Formula in the Mecum auction has body color fender vents and rear guide light bezels.  The tran-zam link says the colors were black, silver, gold and blue but show a car with a white stripes and all the cars have the fender vents and rear marker bezels painted. You'd think there would be a definitive source saying what is correct?

White with black stripe from a Hemmings ad:

Awesome find, THANKS! It's a Formula clone but the vents are painted black.

Yes, I wasn't pointing out originality, just further samples. Clearly the one in pic is not original, but perhaps if they were not originally an option they could be a dealer accessory option, in which case vent would be body coloured as per 72 models minus the vent.

Is it a white stripe or silver, and would a white stripe on dark paint still appear as white? Black on white looks good but you said you were not sold on it so wanted something not so in your face, hence the subtle other lighter colours. Does anyone have a 71 or 72 dealer option book, see what could be ordered.

The build manual shows the vents and rear side lights are painted....I'd say that would be the conclusive evidence you're looking for......that red mecum car is incorrect.

The stripes on these cars are reflective. Think of a fire truck or police car how the colors change in appearance in different lights.  The stripe color you are looking at is actually a reflective white. The white does take on a silvery appearance due to the reflective qualities which can be very confusing.

The colors listed are OEM colors. WE can do a custom color but reflective silver is not available.

If going non-standard but in a factory style, a pewter silver-grey stripe would work well with the rims, and not be so loud as a black or coloured stripe.

Yes, that would look great! I'm hesitant to deviate from factory color combo's but a pewter gray would be even better than silver, especially with a set of Year One Rallye II wheels.  Black is the obvious safe choice and had to be an option for a white car.

I recently took some pics of my car after installing new wheels and tires.  Using a side photo I added some rough side stripes on my car with Paint.  I'm still thinking it over, but I'm leaning towards adding the stripes.  Probably won't do it until sometime in April though.  I'll go with black if I add the stripes.

Thanks guys!  The vents would be a PIA to remove so I'll have to make a decision on leaving them white or painting them black.  I'd probably paint them black after installing the stripes and seeing whether I needed a gloss or semi gloss finish on the vents to match the stripes.

Just my opinion (and it does not matter as it's your car and you will do whatever you like) but I don't like the black strips on a white car, I think if you had a dark car a darker strip would look good but not black on white.

BTW - Beautiful car, I really like the 71 vents, I wish I kept mine.

I'd prefer to stay with one of the colors that the factory offered, black, white, gold or blue.  I added the silver just for grins.

Nice. The silver is a great color if straying from factory. I haven’t seen the gold stripe on an actual car before, but it has a “Hurst” feel to it that I also like.

Yeah, I think the gold looks good; that seems a little like an Oldsmobile thing but I'm not opposed to it.  I like the silver, subtle and it looks good with the black interior, white paint and the wheels. I like the black too but it is about as high a contrast color combo that could go on the car.  I have some other things I want to do to the car before I add the stripes, but I think I'm going to do it.

The gold would be ideal if you had tan interior or gold accents on wheels. On it's own it's a little lost. The black works, but it's very bold. Is there a silver/gunmetal closer to the rims, perhaps.

Are you familiar with the 1969 Hurst/Olds? Its color combo is almost identical to mine, white body, black interior, argent wheels, gold stripes (if I installed them).  It comes together nicely.
