engine swap in a 85 trans am question
« on: September 03, 2017, 12:45:29 PM »
a friend of my wifes ahs an 85 trans am, factory as a 305. the motor that is in it now is a 305 but has the electric metered quadrajet. she had it rebuilt and who ever rebuilt it she said put a racing cam in it and it wont run right. she wants to bring me the car and change the cam and lifters in it, that's no big deal, so long as the motor isn't locked up. it has been sitting for 10 years in her drive. if the motor is locked she wants to put another motor in it, do away with the smog pump and all that, and run a reg quadrajet on it. just wondering if a 350 will bolt up to the trans for the 85 trans am? and will there be any computer changes to run the over drive trans?

Sure, the transmission will work.  It's not electronically controlled except for the torque converter.  The shifting is not computer controlled.  Running the lockup torque converter with a regular carburetor is possible, and in fact you could just wire it to lock up with a switch on the dash.  You can make it do what you want to automatically as well.
