79 Y84 Trans Am SE How to install Amber rear indicators
« on: October 29, 2012, 11:05:27 PM »
I have just import into Australia a 79 Y84 SE Trans Am and I am wondering if anybody can assist in how to re wire the rear tail lights to allow to separate the indicators (with amber lenses) from the brake lights.
Thanks

It depends, have you picked up the amber lenses yet and which sections are going to be your new indicators, outer ends? On my '78, same arrangement but different lenses and bulb holders, I also swapped out the rear red side markers and added amber lenses here also, wired them up as a rear indicator as well.

I cheated a little,  I had a spare tail light harness to pinch bulb holders from and rearrange into my own custom harness. You'll notice there are two types of bulb holder for single or double filament bulbs, some of these don't have a second use but use the same bulbs and holders, and have no wire for the unused portion. When I had mine wired up originally at the auto electrician, they ignored my instructions and took the shortcut and charged a fortune. The end result was that they didn't rearrange the bulb holders as asked, reused the single function dual filament bulb holders on the outsides as is stock for park lights only. This in turn gives you a low power flasher by using the smaller filament, you can't turn them around. So be aware of that part. That is where I pinched some from a spare loom, ended up using the brake light bulb holders for the outers so you can power the larger filament instead for bright flashers. You can't use the single contact bulb holders here due to how they fit into the lighting backs, 74-78 anyway, different offsets.

Luckily the bulb holders are also a common GM design, even the later 79-81 type. That will all sound confusing and I'm confusing myself and nearly 3am, but once you sort out which bulbs will be your flashers, swap them if required, then it's just a case of redirecting the wiring, flashers, brake lights, park lights, leave the reversing lights and license plate lights alone, extend the flasher wiring onto the side markers if you are changing them from red to amber too.

I can scribble up a diagram if you like, although plenty of 79-81 here locally who have done their own too.

I would be interested in your diagram. I intent to change the outer corners into the amber colour with the amber lenses that I got in NSW.
These just need to be cut and glued in once the original piece is removed.
I also have a complete rear tail light harness to use if necessary.
Thanks for your reply.

I had an Auto Sparky do my indicator lights in the '76 T/A, he ran the wires straight from the fusebox. This way he could seperate the Brake Lights from the indicators.

The Amber lenses work great too!

I replied in another thread, but this is a good place to keep the data handy for Aussies searching.

my friend has converted a number of F-body tail lamps.....he said to -

identify the two rear flasher power wires coming out of the the multi-pin plug on the column. Cut these wires leaving enough wire fro mteh plug to attach two new wires (dual core flex is good for this).
You run the new flasher power wires to the rear and connect then to the outer lamp holders...these are the new flasher power wires.
The existing dual stop/tails can then be used on the inner map positions.

You need to open up the lenses/housings and add a blanking piece inside the housing that makes the indicator area separate from the stop/tail part of the light. I just made up a piece of sheet metal with tabs on it and glued it into position.

Do yourself a favour and clean up the interior of the lamp housings and paint them gloss white inside.....really brightens up the lights....works a lot better than the silver used by GM.

I did it the shorter way, created a new taillight harness that connects in the trunk. I redirected a few wires and rearranged some bulbs/sockets to get combination I was after with help form spare harness. I've done it twice now, cut and resoldered to suit as have moved the amber inserts from lens centre to outer location.

Question for the Australians: You have the problem that you have to seperate the brake light from the turn signal light only or you have also to change the turn signal from red to amber too?

Can you guys post some pictures of this please? I'd love to see what it looks like as it sure sounds cool  and might be a fun thing to do to a car up here in the USA.

Yes, can't have the red leaching across into the amber or opposite, too much anyway. I've only changed out amber lens ends and grouped the bulbs accordingly and I think it looks fine, a lot clearer than many new cars with clear lens lamps on them. But I've also measured and drawn up a simple template for when the time comes where I may add an aluminium or styrene divider plate between the amber and the red just to define the two just a fraction more. A small amount of light emitted along the lens itself as they are joined flush, no plate in the lens itself but some guys do. It's not at all a problem amount, if anything it may be safer as you can make out the pale outline of the outer flashers, but not a colour as such or as if they were on either, just makes the outline of the vehicle more visible.

I took photos of the completed lenses when polished up and fully lined, and working the different lights, but can't find them. There's a photo or two of the early mockups here. Others with car on the road will prob have much better pics to share!

These are my 71 lights, but the principal remains the same. You can see the divider plate I made up to split the centre and outboard light reflectors. I glued this into position, but when assembled, the plate cannot go anywhere as it's captured by the lens.

I painted the interior of the light hi gloss white as I've found this to give the brightest tail lights.

Heres the completed light with the OER lens cut and the new outer amber section added.

The company that does this amber section makes them for 70-73, 74-78 and 79-81 light units.

After doing this to my T/A, I was worried I had to do the same to the Lemans...LOL....Nup.   As long as my brake lights are seperated from my indicators, I can run red lenses in Western Australia........I'm already there, just have to hook it all up to the white wire that connects to the indicators at the steering column.

What is the rationale of this?  I could understand the amber turns only but...

They want to see the brake lights engaged while the Indicators operate seperately.
