1980 Indy Turbo 301 with failed ESC
« on: May 25, 2017, 11:13:39 AM »
I know about ESC failure with the 1980 Turbo TA Indy Pace car.  I just bought one and it has that issue, so got a lower price.

Elsewhere on TAC, someone mentioned the failure was of a capacitor and that seems a simple fix. Got the car started by putting a temporary jumper in the ESC connector, which I learned from 301 Garage.  Can't drive it, but got it started which is a big step forward.

I have a source of an original ESC box, but has anyone found a way to repair the ESC or manufacture an alternative that does the same spark ~ for the turbo to prevent detonation?

Is that a 7-wire HEI distributor?  Megasquirt 2 computer are very plug n play with those.  I posted a video of one of these cars running a GM TBI instead a carb recently.  I know there's a computer for 81 models but I'm not sure about the 80.

Don't let the top picture of the computer board intimidate you!  There's prebuilt computers for this.

If I remember correctly, Mini TA on the 301 garage does test and fix the ESC units.

Joe at TTA Performance would be a good source to talk to on this subject.

Is that a 7-wire HEI distributor?

If you mean the number of terminals on the ignition module that sets under the rotor, mine has five.

Thanks. I'll sign up on the 301 Garage forum and ask Mini TA about that service.
