301 Turbo with Megasquirt EFI
« on: April 05, 2017, 07:24:39 PM »
I was just searching around on Youtube and found someone recently posted a setup I think is really cool and different.  He's using a Megasquirt computer to control a GM 5.7 TBI unit on his 301 Turbo engine.

Totally cool!

I believe this car is an '81 judging by the firewall harness.  Even cooler for me to see because the '81 the 301 Turbo cars came with a computer controlled 7-wire HEI distributor from the factory.  These engines were the only true Pontiacs to ever receive computer controlled timing.  This makes this setup really unique if he's controlling the '81 distributor with the Megaquirt ECU.

If you want to check it out, the Diyautotune website has one of the write-ups for showing what efi can do on an old engine.  It's a lengthy read but you can see dyno graphs showing all the differences.

I'm attempting a similar build route on my '79 W72 400.  I'm utilizing a late 80's 454 TBI (big bore and big injectors), single plane Holley intake and a computer controlled '81 301 Turbo distributor.  Honestly, I'm really surprised there's not more people doing these types of builds on this website.

I thought about it for my 79 Formula 301. It is a strong (as strong as a 301 is) engine but really could use EFI. I will probably just buy some bolt on system though. We'll see. The EFI in my 79 TA (LS) is going to spoil me...
