2017 Pontiac Powered Autocross and Road Race Thread
« on: March 20, 2017, 07:37:41 AM »
I'm happy to kick off this years racing thread.  Finally got my car back together again just in time for the Fort Worth Spring Good Guys.  My winter changes were new Edelbrock Heads w/round ports, Doug's Ceramic Coated Headers, 4th gen Booster & MC, 4th gen Radiator and dual electric Fans, Pan hard bar, C5 Z06 disc brake conversion with PowerStop Track day pads and a lot of other stuff that has to happen to make those things work.  I LOVE the brakes! Huge difference in braking, which is a really good thing because the heads/headers made for a huge difference in the power output too!

On her first voyage out, I placed 4th and my 16yo son 6th with us taking it easy to get a feel for how the car was doing and making sure the temps stayed cool and the brakes were good and we are still using last years whipped tires.

Got out again and got a few pictures this past weekend.  Autocross on Saturday and SCCA Club trials on Sunday, what a blast!

I attended the Optima event this past weekend at the National Corvette Museum and Motorsports Park for some Autocross, Road Race and Speed Stop.  What a blast it was to meet a bunch of new folks and, of course to run the TA hard!

My first session on the West circuit of NCM was in the wet and made for some interesting driving but, what a blast!

There were 90 cars at the competition and here is some of the field...

We had the SCCA Cam Challenge series in our neck of the woods last weekend, boy is that a fun event!  Lots of cool cars that sound great since there are mostly cars with V8's.  The vintage or Traditional class had 17 and the contemporary class had 30 something and then the S class- Vette's and light cars had about 15 cars.

Yup- that's the DSE Camaro with Kyle Tucker driving!  I went against Kyle in the challenge bracket, he won of course.  He's a great driver and that car has been an icon of autocross for years.

Awesome car and looks like you had a great time. What can possibly beat that combo? :-)

I went to the Optima Street Car Challenge in Pikes Peak International Raceway last weekend and had a blast!  I made through the entire race without car incident and drove the car back on the trailer for the trip home.

And back to the Fall Good Guys autocross.  We've had a great time this season and been all over, the winter changes produced real results and kept the car true to Trans Am's.  This TA has done well with two drivers trying to get the best times we can.

And a Picture from the way the car was in 2013...

It's getting some gears over the winter, by way of T56, and hopefully some other changes that will help our cornering.  And a few D&E things to help out.  Mostly just trying to work on the driver mod., the kid is getting fast and won't be long before I am chasing him.

T-56 will be nice! Be proud of the boy! Then when you put the new trans in tell him if he breaks it he's gotta pay for it, maybe that'll slow him down a little ahahaha.

Ya, I'm really looking forward to the T56 in that car.  I've owned the car for 8 years and have wanted a stick in there since I got it.  You gotta believe I'm proud of him, I knew he would get faster before too long!  When he isn't driving himself he is riding with Dusold and the other really fast guys in the area absorbing everything.  He keeps asking to drive an Optima event and maybe he will next year.

I haven't cut mine up either, and it's a 87K mile Y88.  What do you go by on IG?  The only thing I've cut up are the front spindles to make way for the PowerStop C5 Z06 calipers and rotors.  Other than that, I could put it back to stock in a long weekend, including the # matching engine.  I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to say that though, this summer may be the last of ever going back to stock....  Stay tuned.

My couple seconds of fame on the Search for the ultimate street car series on MavTV.  This is from the Pikes Peak event last July!

I had one other smaller cameo appearance during the road course section where it looked like I was running down a GTR.  I wish I was but, that would not be true.  The GTR was very fast.  As it was, I placed 9 in the GTV group in Autocross.  Pretty good for a guy with a day job and bills to pay!

Have fun!  My advice for your first autocross is to start VERY slow and get used to the course before you start working on the loud pedal hard.  See if you can ride with a few folks before you go drive.
