pontiac 455 cranking problem
« on: November 24, 2016, 10:38:25 AM »
Hello everyone! i am having a weird issue with cranking my 455.  It seems to only crank 1 time, then stops, then cranks one time, then stops again.  I cannot get the motor to crank over smoothly.  Even if i remove all the spark plugs and cover one of the holes with my finger, the engine has the same problem.  If i dont cover any of the spark plug holes, the engine cranks over fine.  The engine is free and has been looked over on the engine stand.  Could i just have a weak starter?

Your stopping the engine from turning over with only one finger in one of the eight empty spark plug holes?

yes and i can only think of it being a weak battery or the starter.  I have checked the battery and switched it three times and the same problem continues.  its strange that it want to stop cranking with one spark plug hole covered.

Definitely electrical. I would focus on checking your ground and positive cable for hidden corrosion (ohm meter). Make sure the positive and ground wire is secure. If those items check out , I would then focus on the starter solinoid and starter. I did at one time have a internally corroded cable, same symptoms as you are describing.

BTW, also check the ignition key switch.

Just now seeing this. I had a very similar problem. I installed a 220 mini starter and a oversized alt. haven't had any starting problems since.

crazy that you can stop it covering one hole with your finger.

besides that it sounds like very advanced timing.

but it still doesn't make sense.
