WRONG T-TOPS
« on: August 07, 2017, 07:27:54 AM »
Hi all...new to TA Country.  Just bought a 77 y82 and did not know that the t-tops that are on the car are actually fishers.   Numbers match as far as the dash and engine.  I havent been able to check the firewall VIN due to accessibility.  Appears to be bondo where the roof seam meets the rear quarter which I am guessing that is the clue there was a roof swap plus a decent crack in the paint near the sail decal which I assume is a bondo crack.  Also windshield and rear windows are not original either.

I assume this significantly reduces the value of the car, correct?  Car is in rough shape and is in need of restoration so finding/installing a donor Hurst roof is a possibility.  Assuming I am right on the devaluation, how often does a 76-78 Hurst roof come up for sale?

also...PO installed a delete plate where the AC was.  Any tricks on accessing the bolts under the fender?

Seems a bit odd, does the PHS indicate y82? Maybe they expected less leaking. Fyi, the ttop cars can crack paint there without a swap, like mine.

Good question, really.  If you were to restore the car as original, then yes, it would be worth a lot.  The tops are a trivial problem to correct in my opinion on a restoration.  On the other hand, if you are going to modify the car at all, even a little, I'm not sure the Fishers are a problem value-wise.  They're a lot better t-tops, but I am not a fan of the roof itself.

Anyway, the a/c bolts, you can reach that by taking out the inner fender. that is the least aggravating way, I think.

P.S. There's no such thing as a hurst roof.  The Hurst tops were put in with a sawzall. The tops, with all the attaching hardware, used to be really common at swap meets, but nowadays it might take a little searching to turn up a set.  They are not rare, but there is certainly strong demand, and the black ones are specific to the SE.

Thanks guys...Always appreciate confirmation of the gut feeling.  I actually found a local muscle car parts shop that claims to have 2-3 of what I need.  $200 for the roof + $150 a panel.  Seems reasonable to me.  I will check them out next week and try to find the H/H 2nd design style.

Nate--yes PHS confirms the y82 and the W72.

Another question...did the 77 SE come with a dome or rectangular light on the roof?  I dont have a build sheet to reference.  Pulled the seats, front buckets are not original and dropped the tank...someone else got it it first.  :(

Since the SE was only a pinstripe option, the interior light could have been either. The map light style isn't common but would likely only be on a buildsheet if at all. If original roof lining it may have marks where round dome mounted once.

What Aus said. The round light was standard I believe. The rectangular had a centre dome light and separate reading lights on each side. This was an extra cost item. Either could have been on any firebired/trans am

Below is a picture of the rectangular dome light. I have seen roofs for sale. Good luck with the roof swap.  Dano
