It's been a few weeks since I've had an update. I got a little burnt out from pushing so hard to be able to drive it this year. Well cold weather is here in Upstate, NY and the car is up on stands and will be up until spring. I've really just been tinkering on the car here and there, but had enough progress that it could qualify for an update. One thing I have been working on is getting the upper cowl piece installed. I didn't realize that the lower trim piece actually held on the cowl. I was missing one of the end clips and had it for a while before I attempted to install it. I was very disappointed with the lack of fitment. It was completely the wrong shape and was actually too short to reach where the original screw was. after a lot of tweaking I was able to make it work well enough to get it to hold with a screw in the stock location.





I also test fit my wiper arm with new blades and was happily surprised to find that my wiper motor works 100%. It will turn high, low, and then return back to the off position. I've read where some motors have bad internal grounding and will just stop where ever you shut them off.

Another project I started on was figuring out my fuel level sender. I'm not sure what is causing the level sensor to error out, but I figured now that I have a programmable gauge, I'll just use the stock LS3 fuel level sensor that is located on the fuel pump assembly. I removed it initially, but don't want to pay another $40 bucks for another universal, and I already had the one that came with my pump. I searched around and couldn't seem to find any concrete data showing the fuel level ohms for the 5th gen pump. I confirmed that the full level is 240-33 ohms empty to full. I also double checked hooking it to my gauge and it works properly.

I also have a good parts update. I picked up a pair of brand new LH/Driver's side 98-02 Fbody backing plates for my LS1 rear brakes. When I did the swap originally I wanted to keep the brakes symmetrical but the rear caliper is just too close to the shock for my comfort. I got a great deal from a member her on PT, and he also included a set of brackets to use the stock ebrake cables that were custom made for 1st gens and some spacers. I'm hoping to get those swapped out soon and while I'm pulling the axles, I'm going to drill them out for 1/2" studs to match the front.



I've also been doing some maintenance on my Daily Driver 03 Silverado. I checked my oil a while back and noticed that there was a flake of rust! WTF, so upon closer review I noticed that the dipstick was rusting in half. So I swapped that out for an AC Delco replacement.



Then when I was changing the plugs a few weeks ago, I finally decided to extract the two rear manifold bolts that broke the heads off. Anyone that has been around these trucks know that it's all too common for the heads of the bolts to pop off. Well mine started to cause an awful manifold leak and drove me nuts. Best method for getting them out without pulling the manifolds is to weld a nut to the head. Sounds a lot easier than it was. 3 hours later I finally got them both removed and replaced with new revised bolts. The problem wasn't really getting to the bolts it was getting the welds to stick. Everything was rusted and I couldn't just put a grinder in there to clean it up.



My plan for the next few months will be to:

-Get the front springs pulled back out, cut and re-installed to drop the front end where it should be
-Pull the axles, drill for 1/2" studs, swap on my new LH
-Finish/Tidy up all of my wiring (tail light harness, fuel level sender, Fan relays, etc)
-Re-finish and install interior components.
-See if I can fit tail pipes/weld on a wideband bung

All for now.

Nice score on the rear break kit! Oh, and remember these cars had really bad fit and finish anything you do as far as trim and anything on the body will be 100% better than factory. I am amazed you got those broken bolts out. Great job!

Haven't touched the car in a few weeks, been busy getting the house prepped for winter and cutting/splitting/stacking firewood. I had some time in the garage, and wanted to clear off my workbench first. I put up some shelves and signs that I have been meaning to put up for a while now. What I started with.



And after my signs and shelves were up. I had a bunch of signs from my last house, but haven't taken the time to hang them up. I have a few upper cabinets that I want to hang up too no the other side of the garage too.





Once the bench was cleared off, I finished up one of the little projects I have been working on. I wanted a clean place to house the two programming buttons for the Dakota Digital gauges, but wanted them to be out of sight. I figured the ash tray would be the best spot for them. I bent up this little bracket that bolted through the little hole in the tray and used a tapered screw. Worked great and was super solid. I used a piece of 14 gauge stainless scrap I had in my metal pile.







Now I need to take it back apart and paint the inside of the ash tray as well as my new bracket and screw. I'll paint it a satin black so hopefully it will all disappear if/when I open it. I also left room in case I ever wanted to add other switches.

I also finished up my wiper arm repair. I had the original wiper arms from my car, and wanted to use them it was missing the spring and clip. My Pa had several other arms and we found the parts to rob so we could get mine functioning again.



All for now, but I'm hoping to slowly start reassembling the cowl piece so I can fit the hood! I haven't seen the car together yet with all the body panels. I cleaned up the hood hinges a while ago, just need to spray them with some satin paint and I'll be all set to put the hood back on. I need to have the hood on in order to set the gaps for the cowl piece. Then I can button down the front for good. Good thing is I can take my time since it's a solid 5 months until I can drive it again...

It's been a little while since I've had a meaningful car post, but I finally got the motivation to do some work on the car again. My wife went to bed early on Friday night and I decided it was time to tear apart my rear end again. I recently picked up a pair of brand new GM LH backing plates for the LS1 rear brakes. I already had the LS1 rear brakes on the car, but the passenger side caliper and shock were too close for comfort. It kinda felt wrong because it seems like I just got it all buttoned up, but I should have just done it right the first time. Live and learn. Started with the Driver's side.



Now because I'm using the two LH assemblies it causes the ebrake levers to pull from a different direction, so to fix that you simply need to remove the lever assembly and swap it 180*. That way both assemblies will pull towards the front. What I started with.





In order to make the assembly pull towards the front you simply pull both sliders out, pull the lever out, flip it 180*, reinstall the lever and reinstall the sliders on the opposite sides. Then you re-install the parts in the reverse order they were disassembled. It was really that easy and took no more than 5 mins. The only real downside is that you loose the locking adjuster, but for the amount I drive the car, it shouldn't be an issue.

Front pull conversion finished. It's also worth noting that I don't need to do this with the passenger side since swapping sides, it will pull from the front since the sides are not mirrored any longer.





Picture of the passenger side with the caliper now staggered away from the shock. Much safer now.



The other thing that I picked up with the backing plates were these slick little brackets that will allow me to use my stock ebrake cables. I picked them up from a guy on pro-touring.com, but I believe these were actually made by the guy that did the write-up here: https://www.camaros.net/forums/16-brakes-suspension-steering/161383-ls1-rear-disc-install-lots-pictures.html





I also picked up some very lightly used caliper brackets, so I cleaned them up and painted the same satin black as the calipers.





Then the driver's side was all re-installed and ready to go back together. I didn't take any pictures as it doesn't look any different than before. At this point the only thing that I need to do to finish up this swap is a new LH brake caliper. I bought a used LH C5 caliper that is on it's way. One I clean it up and paint it satin black, I'll swap the brakes back over and the rear brakes are done. Then I can focus on getting the e-brakes functional.



I called it quits on Friday night and had some more time again on Saturday to attempt the other bigger project that's been on my mind. Ever since I first installed those DSE front springs, I was unhappy how much it lifted the front of the car. Come to find out the DSE springs are meant to work with their own lower control arms that have a ~2" drop pocket, which is why their 2" lowering springs ended up raising my ride height. After messaging with their customer service, which was excellent by the way, they informed me that with their springs 1/4 coil equals 1/2" of drop. After measuring the car and deciding where I wanted the drop to end up, wanted to cut 1 1/4 coils off to give me a 2.5" drop. I cut it a little moderately in the hopes that the springs will settle and potentially give me more like a 3" drop.

This much closer to what I was expecting with a drop spring.







Before I cut anything I took some measurements from the only place that I could really find a consistency. I measured from the top of the wheel arch to the top of the rim. The DSE calculation was nearly spot on. I'm hoping that once the hood is bolted down and the springs settle slightly that it will give it a little more rake.



Overall lots of progress this weekend and now that these two projects are done, for me it's just a bunch of small projects now.

Another weekend and I made some more significant progress. I really wanted to get my hood installed on the car so that a kid or animal didn't damage it from sitting on the floor. My Dad and Father-in-law have been busy recently and I was anxious, so I made the decision to just do it myself. It was definitely sketchy, but I grabbed as many clean blankets and towels I could find and padded my cowl area. I went in from the driver side and let the hood corner rest on the cowl. Once I got the first bolt in the hinge, I was good to go. I took my time and got the hood in a good spot where I am ok with the gaps. I think the hood was tweaked slightly by laying on the floor of my basement, so I'm going to see if I can tweak it a little to fit the crown a little better.







While I was setting the gaps on the hood, I was also setting the gaps on the cowl panel. I also had to shim the cowl on both ends to match the height of the fender. After I removed the tape and locked the panel down for good, it looked much better.





Then a few shots of the engine bay. It's almost complete, just need to finish up a little wiring and finalize the CAI.







While I was working on fitting the hood and cowl, I was also cleaning and painting up some parts. I finally received my LH C5 caliper to finish off my rear brakes. It was really clean as is, but I wiped it down and put a fresh coat of the Semi-Gloss heat paint to match the other calipers. It turned out great.





The other piece was my ebrake petal assembly, just basically scuffed and shot with a Semi-Gloss. It's flatter than it looks in the picture.



Then on Saturday afternoon when my son was napping and wife was busy, it was time finalize the rear brakes. I had been keeping the RH caliper on there until I was ready to swap them over. Then I quickly swapped them over to reduce the amount of fluid loss. Looks great and I was able to bend the brake lines back to where they were originally. I had to re-route and bend the lines slightly when I had the RH side installed to avoid hitting the shock. So that makes me happy.

As I was working along, I was taking some inventory of what I have on my car and what I still need and got the itch to install the side mirror and marker lights. This is the fun part! Just bolt it on and step back! So much easier than cleaning up and painting parts.



Before someone says it, I know they are Nova front marker lights. I like the amber color.

Looks good Ryan, My hats off to you for installing the hood by yourself! I did about 99.9% of the work on my car by myself, but I did have to recruit my wife for help when I installed the hood.

Thanks for all of the compliments guys! I'm really starting to get excited about this project coming to an end. One thing that I'm struggling with is putting old parts on the new fresh paint job. I just need to draw a line in the sand because I really want to drive this car. I'm basically going to use the parts that I have, unless they are totally trashed, like my marker light bezels. I am ready to stop spending money on parts and spending money on gas. 8-)

I think that it may be possible scarebird. I've not looked into putting the vent window in a 68 door. I know that 67 and 68 doors are different enough to require their own hinges and door panels. One thing about the first gen Camaro's that I've found is that many parts are unique year over year. It makes sourcing original parts difficult at times. Although the aftermarket literally reproduces any part that came on a 1st gen so there is always that.

So the 68 door panel hang over the top and the 67's are flat with the door itself being the upper edge?

Yes, the top part of the 67 door is usually painted the interior color and has a flat door panel where as the 68 door has a door panel that goes up and over the metal door frame, just like all 2nd gens.

Correct.  Not many if any are interchangeable.  I collect all of the 67 parts that I can as they are hard to find.  I have 3 sets of vent windows...

I don't think I've checked in on this post in a while Ryan.  Been so wrapped up in my own project...The Camaro looks great.  I'm happy to see you were able to get a few miles in before winter set in.
I love those 'switchback' LED lights.  I hadn't seen those before.  When I get my car out for body and paint I might try to figure out away to use something like that on my TA.  I had already been trying to think of how/where a set of 'driving' or 'fog' lights could fit in the front end. sounds like a nice side project.
  I love the look of 'em in the lower valance of your Camaro.

I made a small bit of progress buttoning up some little tasks. It was one of those nights where I found myself not staying focused on one task. I started by painting the inner cowl's with a Rustoleum product that is similar to POR, but is oil based. I like it more than POR15 because it is oil based, but the one drawback is it takes several days to fully cure. I just need to clean up the kick panels now and add some sealer puddy and then I can install the ebrake lever assembly.



Next was cleaning up and reinstalling the Astro Vents. It took me a little while to get everything lined up, but I got them re-installed and they look good. I'm planning on making a purchase to National Parts Depot very soon and I think I'm just going to get some new vents. These are very faded and some of the "chrome" is lifting. Although I need to prioritize what I NEED verse what I WANT. The chrome vents would be a quick and easy upgrade down the road, so I may just pass on them.



Next is my attempt at saving some bucks. I saw how many people just buy the BBC heater core and flip them in the heater box, then trim a hole in the outer heater box when doing the LS swaps go give a little more room. I got to looking at my heater core and it had both of the tube that had the solder broken but otherwise in good shape. I thought, well how hard would it be to just make my own tubes from copper and solder them in place of the stock ones. Then I could save $75 bucks rather than a new heater core. After a little measuring and a trip to the parts store, I decided to give it a try. I started with this.

First tube in place. It's definitely promising.







I used several pictures of the stock BBC heater cores as a reference of how to bend my tubes. Once the tubes were in place, I decided to solder the top tube in place and see how it fit. That way if I need to adjust I only had to move one, not both.



Not a great picture of the solder, but here is that as well as the retaining clip that needed to be trimmed slightly.





I made this little holder from cardboard on where I thought the tubes should be to hold the lower tube in place since it wasn't soldered.



Then it was time for the first test fit. I honestly couldn't have been happier with the initial fitment. Nothing touches and it lined up perfectly. Very pleased with that. Keep in mind the lower isn't soldered yet, so it looks wonky.





Here is both a picture of the soldered lower section and a pinhole from cracked solder that I found after filling it water.



Here is my super high tech method for checking leaks.







I was running out of time and didn't get a chance to finish, but I did have one tiny leak on the opposite side that I need to fix. I also bought some parts to build a pressure tester. I've been wanting to build one of these for a long time and what better excuse. Basically some fittings from the hardware store and an old Round-Up sprayer. It builds pressure to 10 psi, but I have a leak somewhere and didn't get a chance to fix that either. I think I need a check valve in the round up container. I think that's where it's leaking. Originally I picked up that old sprayer to use as a cheap version of the "Mighty Vac" for bleeding brakes. But I've adapted it for just building pressure.





Not a car post, but I thought this was pretty cool. Don't shame me, but I was getting a burger recently at McDonald's and when I was looking at my receipt I noticed that my number in line was 1320. For anyone that doesn't know, that is how many feet in a quarter mile. I guess the car gods are telling me that I need some drag slicks! At least maybe that's how I'll explain it to my wife.

nice update. If replacing the heater core on a first gen is anything like on a second gen I would have invested in the new one, but that's because replacing it is 3 weeks worth of garage time for me. lol

Your receipt comment reminds me of the other day. I was driving with the wife. Stopped at a light. Realized that my odometer was exactly my zip code. had to take a pic (that didnt turn out). we car folk are odd ducks sometimes... haha

Been working on the car on and off while I've been on holiday break from work. I've been mostly taking care of some small things here and there. I finished up the conversion from SB to BBC heater core, and confirmed overnight that it held pressure. I know it's not a big deal, but I think it's pretty cool.





Then I confirmed that everything fit. I had also tried to make my own surround for the heater hoses, but decided to just buy the ones that they had on eBay. They came with the blockoff and the bezel and seal. Should be here soon and then I can install the heater box for good.







I've also been working on a way to adapt stock 68 Camaro ebrake cables to work with my LS1 rear brakes. I came up with this little bracket and I think that it will work out great. I ordered a replacement front eBrake cable so I can test it out. I made it out of aluminum first since it was really easy to bend, then made one out of steel for the final copy.





Worked on cleaning up and installing the kick panels. I pulled out the cable and lubed it all up so it works just like new. I also did some research on what to use to replace the puddy that was behind the kick panels and found some stuff in the electrical section of the Home Depot. It's made by Gardner Bender called duct seal. It's the same color, consistency and sealed up great.





After I installed the kick panel, I also threw in the eBrake assembly that I cleaned up a while ago.



This is another project I've been working on for a while. Most of the connections in the older GM cars use a Packard 56 terminals and I've been searching for a cheaper alternative to the crimpers that are out there now. I searched around eBay and found a cheap crimper that does open barrel terminals and looked like it would work. This is what I started with, but when I crimped the male terminals it would distort, so I had to modify the jaw slightly.







And here are the crimps after it modified the jaw. It works perfectly now and only cost me $15 bucks.





There were a few non-Camaro things that have been keeping me busy as well. My truck is really starting to show it's age, but really runs and drives great, so it's tough not to just fix what's wrong with it. About two weeks ago, it was down for a few days because the power steering cooler blew a hole in the line. Then when I went to change the oil a few days ago, the rear diff cover rusted through and was leaking... Luckily both were cheap fixes, but a PITA.



My father-in-law has been getting really into slot cars recently and has a really nice 1/24 Carrera set in his basement and it's been getting more and more competitive with the family. The brother-in-laws have gotten cars and it's just gotten "worse" since then. Until now, we have all just been running our cars stock, but I decided to take it to the next level with an aftermarket motor. The stock motor is roughly a 13k rpm engine and I've replaced it with an RMS 30K rpm unit.





I decided to get a new motor because my car was maxed out in stock form. Once I got it installed we kept having to turn down my speed because it was so fast. Before we had our cars turned up to 100% speed, and mine was quite a bit slower. Now with mine at 40% it was way faster than all the other cars. With my car at 20% speed it keeps up with them all and it's much more fun to compete.

I made several purchases recently, with one rather large one to National Parts Depot. Would like to thank NPD for supplying the gift certificates that were in a raffle here on TAC about a year ago. It really helps with my "Penny Pincher" theme.

Seems like a major step up in RPM on that slot car motor...darn! 

That parking brake setup on the LS1 cars seems to be a big hangup for most people doing that conversion.  This is one of the reasons why I went with a Wilwood Kit.  Hope to see you get that worked out!  Keep us posted.

I'm hoping to get the front parking brake cable so I can install all of the cables to verify if they work or not.

I also picked up a mystery cam recently that the seller didn't know what the specs were. I picked it up for next to nothing thinking that the specs were probably too much for what I want given that he referred to it as aggressive. After a little searching I found out that it was a Lunati cam and the part number stamped on the cam was at some point revised. I cross referenced Lunati's site and found the specs to be nearly what I was looking for, and to boot it has a lower lift number which means it will work with my Z06 valve springs. Now I'm debating on whether or not I want to go through swapping cams right now...

The cam has a different wear pattern than I've seen before, but nothing catches my finger nail so it should be fine.

Nice job on the Slot Car!  Sounds like a fun way to spend time at family gatherings.  The past couple  holiday's my family's been passing time with little 'jam sessions'.  My brother brought his guitar a couple holidays ago and it's grown since then, now everyone is bringing their instruments or their voices.
What year is your truck?  The underside looks like our '02 Durango.   Lost 2 brake lines and a trans line to rust over the past few months.  The thing still rides and looks like new though.

Thanks Tom, that high torque motor made all the difference. Before the motor swap, the best time that I could run was a 4.015 second lap. Everyone else was running sub 4 second runs, with my father in law running around a 3.7ish. That was with us all running at 100% speed, but now for all the cars to be competitive I have to turn mine down to 20%, and I ran them last night with a best lap time of 3.721  :cool: His track is a Carrera Digital 1/24 and is super high tech for slot cars. He downloaded a track software app from a place in Germany that interacts with the software that gives a read out to his flat screen and calls out things like new leaders, new high lap times, lap count downs, and when you need to "fuel up". Yes, we just installed the pit lane and you need to actually need to make a "Pit Stop" to digitally refuel your car! We have a blast with it and sometimes get a little crazy when we have too much to drink haha.

I got the box a little later than I had hoped, but my package from National Parts Depot arrived with all of my goodies. I love unboxing a large purchase like this. Now that I have these parts, the last really bigger ticket items are the weather seals and seat covers.

Black one-piece carpet



Gasket kit for emblems, tail lights, and etc.



Gasket and seal kit for the BBC heater core conversion.



Pedal covers, marker light bezels and other misc. items.



New rear package tray.



New shift boot and retaining ring.



Lastly, is a new pair of chrome quarter window trim.



Along with the NPD purchase I also bought some FatMat sound deadner and a new front parking brake cable.





After I unboxed the parts I couldn't help it, so I grabbed one of the marker light bezels and gasket and put it in the fender. Looks SO much better than the bubbling and pealing marker lights I had.



I had a little time this weekend and finished up the stock heater box install. It went really smoothly and before I could get it installed for good, I wanted to get some of the FatMat put on to help with sound and heat. This stuff goes on really cleanly and is fun to do. I contours really nicely to all of the panels.



Then I got a roll of 1/4" adhesive foam and stuck it to the box to seal it up. I think that it will work great to seal up the box from the inside.



Everything installed just like it should stock. Nice thing about using the stock harness.





Then once it was installed for good, I popped on the heater trim and seal. Everything fits great, very happy I decided to swap to the BBC heater core. It will look very clean with the two hoses running across the inner fender. I'll probably try and re-drill the lower hole so that it matches up and centers the lower tube better.







Then I cleaned up and reinstalled the heater controls and bezel. It's really starting to come together and look more complete. Anyone have any tips on how to remove the front of the controls without breaking the tabs off? I tried, but both of the pot metal tabs I tried broke off... I'd like to clean inside and possibly repaint the outer bezel, but I don't want to break it any further.



All my updates for now. I can't wait to get the rest of the FatMat installed so I can lay out my carpet! That is always a big milestone in a project.

I'm getting very anxious for spring to get this car out and stretching it's legs. Just a few other finishing details and it'll be ready. A few weeks ago my father-in-law stopped over and helped me adjust my hood. I have been struggling with it because it just wouldn't quite fit right. I came to the conclusion that the core support wasn't square and it needed to be moved only about a 1/8". We ended up getting it moved over and bam, it fits so much better! All the gaps are spot on and right like they were before paint. What a relief.







Other than adjusting the hood, I haven't been doing much on the Camaro. I've been distracted because I was in the process of getting my new truck! Most people that I tell about my truck they say, "Why did you get an older truck?", or "Aren't they worse on gas?" Well what I wanted was something different than what I currently had, which was a 03' Silverado Extended Cab, but I wanted something as reliable and easy to work on. After looking around at my options I came across truck I didn't even know existed, which was the 90's Silverado/Sierra's with a Crew Cab and a Short Box. They weren't very common at all even back then. Well that was it, and I had my sights set on finding one. But this time around I wanted a truck that wasn't from the Rust Belt. Then when I got it home I wanted to swap in an LS motor behind a 4L80e and make a nearly bulletproof rust free truck that I can keep for a long time. Well after about a year of looking I finally found a clean southern truck in the combination that I wanted! And to boot it was loaded with leather, many Denali upgrades, upgraded radio with Nav, and already had an LS motor swapped in! Not only was it an LS motor, it is a low mileage 60k mile LQ9 from a VortecMax truck!

I am so happy to have found the truck I'd been searching for and not only that it was exactly how I would have built the truck. I'm super impressed with how cleanly this truck was build too! It looks bone stock under the hood!







And check out how clean it is on the underside!



Here we are on the NY boarder on the way home. I thought this was a pretty cool shot. He ended up throwing in a bunch of extra parts, that I grabbed and will resell here in NY. Rust free box, Full Floater rear axle, front axle, wheels and tires, and the front spindles from an 02 2500HD.



Here it is safely at home and right before we got about 14" of snow the day we got back!



I still need to dig further into how exactly he did the swap, but for those wondering about the mounts it uses ICT set back plates. He said that everything just bolted right up to the stock trans and used the stock LQ9 flywheel. Just fit together like it was meant to. He had a custom tune done by someone at LT1swap.com, and it shows up as a 2002 Silverado 2500HD when I plugged in HP Tuners. He used the stock manifolds with about 12" of the stock Y-pipe off each manifold and blended it with the stock exhaust. Very professional looking.



So the first impressions for the truck are that it rides just slightly rougher than my 03 1500 which is welcome news as I was expecting much worse. The truck is very comfortable to drive and it really does get out of it's own way with the LQ9. Just have to keep my foot out of it to get decent mileage. Things that I don't like are the brakes, I'll get more on that later, but they need an improvement. Second was the loud exhaust. It has some kind of loud flowmaster muffler, that I'm going to swap out for a much quieter muffler. It will be my DD, so I can't live with that drone.

The brakes are currently stock with 11" single piston front brakes and the larger rear drums. The pedal is very stiff and does take a lot of effort to bring it to a stop. From what I understand that is normal with the GMT400 88-98 trucks, but something I want to change. The guy also included some GMT800 01-07 2500HD spindles (knuckles) with the truck which after reaming the ball joints out are a bolt on for my truck. That will update the truck in several ways, one is bigger 12" or 13" dual piston brakes, but two is that it will make servicing much easier. The GMT800 trucks have a bolt on hub/bearing assembly where as the 400 trucks have a spindle with hub/disk setup. So that is going to be on my list for the spring. I'm also working on a way to swap the rear to disk brakes.



There is also new balljoints upper and lower, tie rods, sway bar bushings, and a bunch of other new parts to completely rebuild the front end. He bought one brand new hub and the other hub is in good shape with no play. So really just need rotors, calipers, pads and hoses. Should be a fairly easy swap and will give a much needed increase in braking performance.





I'm stoked to have this truck and I can't wait to get some miles on it and do a few upgrades along the way.

Nice truck Ryan, my brother in law bought one new just like that only it was a really dark green. It must be nice to be young and full of energy. You crack me up with all of the changes you are planning already. I would be happy with just being able to clean the inside with a quick wipedown! LOL. I would imagine a rust free bed in your part of the country is about worth its weight in gold.

Form, I do like the way that these trucks look with a cowl hood. Maybe an upgrade for the future. I ended up finding it from a site called GMT400.com. They specialize in the 88-98 GMT400 trucks. It wasn't even for sale, I messaged the guy a few times and then made him an offer and he accepted. I was literally searching the whole country and couldn't find one that met all my needs. Then I found this guy and he was only in Charlotte, NC ~11 hours from me. Not bad considering one I wanted was in Oregon which was something like ~2,200 miles away.

Kerry, if it makes me sound less crazy I'll probably wait until I need rotors and pads for the front. I'd be buying the parts anyway so why not upgrade at the same time. He already bought the hubs and knuckles for the brake swap which are the expensive parts. I'd be just buying new calipers, pads and rotors. And yes, a rust free bed in NY is not easy to come by. I'm hoping that someone will pick it up soon so I don't have to store it. It'll help offset the truck purchase too.  :cool:

Well after a long hiatus from the car, I'm almost ready to start back on it to get it ready for the spring cruising season that is rapidly approaching. As I mentioned earlier in my thread since we are expecting another kiddo, which meant we needed to find another room to put my older son since the younger one will take his room. That meant that we needed to add a wall in the upstairs of our house. The 2nd floor of our Cape Cod is finished, but it was basically a 2nd living room with no walls. The cheapest option was to build a wall and finish an area for a new bedroom.

Since I live and breath LS motors, I had to find a way to infuse them into this project. You may ask yourself, "Ryan, who in their right mind is going to put an LS motor in the room?" My reply isn't where, but how. I have a contractor buddy who was looking for a motor for his Jeep YJ project and I have the old 5.3 that came out of my Camaro when I first built it, and we ended up wheeling and dealing for the motor. He framed a wall, hung the drywall, and pre-wired it for me and he knocked off $500 bucks from the bill for the motor. Win! :cool:

I'll just post a few pictures of my progression. Keep in mind I've never done any drywall mudding in my life. Just Youtube and asking questions of others.

Day One 1/31/19





Here's where I pick up over the next several months.





Few weeks later and lots of sanding...





I had to test prime an area to see if I was even in the ballpark of being straight. Turns out I did a decent job of tricking the eye as it came out looking straight!





All primed up!





Paint and a door. Looking like a room now.





I'll post the bad with the good. I originally thought I would have a door that opened to the right, but once the wall was up it made much more sense to open to the left. Well that makes the light switch placement tricky... To avoid having to keep this box there to be within code, I opted to pull new wire and re-route the box to the correct side of the door. Here's my creative solution.



The other part I didn't like was the original owner wrapped these structural posts in an almost nautical rope as the trim. In theory good idea, but in practice didn't go with the theme of our house which isn't nautical. Here's the flooring fitment before:



After I hand routed the post for a seamless fit. I was very happy with this, although it was very tedious with a hack saw and flat head screwdriver. I didn't have the "right" tools, but made due. Now, it looks like the post is just floating on top of the flooring. :cool:



Finally finished the flooring. I went back and forth on this one becuase come to find out the laminate that is up in this room was discontinued in 2008, so after searching the country on CL, calling flooring wholesalers, calling reclaimed flooring distributors, eBay, and etc. I settled that I would have to just get something close and call it a day. Well come to find out our Shaw flooring was an almost dead ringer for the color and "VersaLock" for the Lowe's house brand Project Source! I was over the moon because not only did the color match almost perfectly, they even clicked right together!! Lucked out there big time.





I didn't get many pictures inside of his room as I was going because they were fairly redundant, but here is a few after primer and basically in chronological order. While I had everything out, my wife also decided that we should paint some of the pine the khaki trim color and as much as I disagreed, it really does look good. Just a PITA to scuff sand, prime, mask then paint.





Finally made it to the finish-line this week. I'm very happy with the results for never really doing anything of this magnitude myself before.





Sorry the picture wasn't straight. Took it over my head with my phone in the corner. My son was thrilled and was running around in his new room! We bought him some bunk beds so that if/when he has a friend over they have a place to sleep too. They come apart and will make two twin beds, so that will be an easy thing to do when that time comes.





I still need to go back and fill in the nail holes on the trim, put on the threshold and hang a new light fixture, but then I'm calling it done! As for the car updates, I've been collecting some parts since the end of January so I'll hopefully have something to update once I clean all of the sawdust out of my garage.

Given your attention to detail with the car, I had no doubts that this carpentry project would come out very nice as well.  Looks great.  How high is that ceiling?
