301 keep or sell
« on: December 12, 2015, 11:54:47 AM »
Morning all.. In the next few weeks I will be swapping out the 301 motor and tranny from my 1980.
The motor still runs great just has a rear main leak.. My 400 build should be done by Christmas... ?.
My question is this.. I am kinda limited on space. Is it really worth storing the motor and tranny incase Iever want to sell the car? Or should I. Just sell motor and tranny now? Thanks... Crash

People make a big deal out of "numbers matching" cars, but I doubt the 301 non-turbo cars will ever generate a serious following enough to make owners kick themselves for having put in a 400 vs the original 301.  I would say if you truly don't have the space and need it gone, then feel free to get rid of it (I like having spare good motors though, so I've got 2 on stands here).  If you go to sell it one day and a potential buyer start getting uppity with you over the "numbers matching" 301 being gone, then that person is just looking for an excuse to not buy your car and not to be listened to further.

I agree with Ben, but the problem is you wont get much for it.

I have 3, 301s originals to my cars. I have the space but I dig just pitch one. They are right, I couldn't give the one away. You might get $100 for it....

yeah i get ya. i know 301s will never be in big demand. but i may put it on a stand and sit it in the corner. Or maybe see what i can get. I will keep it as a spare before selling motor and tranny for $100.00 lol :P

You'll have to pay someone to take it in most cases.

"...should I. Just sell motor and tranny now?..."

I've read that all '80 & '81 301's used the 301T block. IF, yours is a 301T block, you can sell it. There are a FEW guys building and even racing, using these 301T blocks.

And, if you have either a TH200 or TH350, they are both worth selling. Most Stock class racers are running one or the other. The quicker cars are running beefed up 200's, because they will run just a hair quicker, because of lighter guts.

One serious racer who uses those blocks, is Rick Unterseh. He probably buys all the T blocks he can find, that are cheap enuff. He posts over on the Pontiac Drag Racers Facebook page.

He also posts on the 301garage.com forum. Those guys will probably know, better than most, what a 301T block is worth. Probably would have to be local pickup only, because of weight.

Also some guys on the PY forum who have built strokers, using the 301T block.
