High Tach reading
« on: November 07, 2015, 09:36:26 AM »
I have a 81 TTA that im restoring. Rebuilt the distributor and my Tach is reading 5500 when I start the car.

I have sent off the cluster for repair and the tach checked good. I have hooked up towo other pontiac cluster and all the tach read the same. I have hooked it up thru the harness, and by passed it by running a wire straight to the white wire on the distributor and 12 volt off the battery and ground to the battery and also car chassis. I have replaced the coil, module, and capacitor with no change in readings. I have unplugged the 4 pin to the computer and jumped A and C. The Dwell is around 16 deg and increase with throttle.
Just found out that it will run with the 4 pin disconnected. The harness itself seems fine all the wires have continuity with only itself. So im not sure how the car is running.

Car runs fine just has a high idle around 2000.

Does anyone have any idea

Checked the tach on a 86 GM truck and it read correctly on the truck distributor.

I have put back in the old condenser, a Ignition module that was in a 81 distributor, and checked good and replaced the wiring harness with another one.

Still reads the same.

Found that the parts stores list a V6 pickup under a 4.9 301 Turbo. I just stuck it in. Changed the pickup out with a V8 one and tach is reading correct.
