It actually looks like a good deal and heads alone are worth the price.  I just gave the machine shop the go ahead to build my last and final 403 and out of blocks now.  Appreciate the help, but will have to pass now.

I think there won’t be many more 403 builds as blocks are drying up.  My build that I just posted was quite expensive and was near the cost of a brand new gm Ls.

little late, but curious what this 403 was.

i recently passed on a pontiac 400 short block $200...  already had cam uograde .030 over .010 on crank some performance pistons (forget brand)
it was built up several years ago and car owner decided to do a 400 stroker (i think 461 or something) .... so he needly an earlier block... this was a 78-79 block that is known as too weak/riskier to stroke.
i have OLDS setup in my TA so i passed....  thinking refresh of that motor simple enough maybe $200 rings, bearings and... but than i would need all new ancillary brackets, gaskets, heads & intake... flywheel i assumed too.... ran up over $1000 real quick....

still though $200 for that short block was good deal... pistons alone were like 500 when I looked them up. he just couldnt do much more HP out of it without risk.

Actually 78-79 400's are the good ones. They are as good as the 74 and earlier blocks. It's the 75-77 blocks that were the weak ones.

I may have been mistaken on the year.
I cross referenced the block number and researched. I am more familiar with Olds.

The number was #500557

Yes, the 557 ones are the weak ones. It's hard to tell from some of the engine block number references on the internet what the complete story is about the late 70's 400 blocks. It is possible that the 557 block you saw was from a 78 with the 180 horsepower 400 engine (L78). So, you would be half right if it was a from a 78  . In his book, Rocky Rotella says the 557 block is good enough up to 400 hp in a street car.

In late November 1977(which is the 1978 model year), Pontiac built the last stockpile of 400's that were to be used for the rest of 1978 and in 1979. Pontiac brought back the heavier duty 481988 block casting and labeled it the XX481988, which is as good as the 74 and earlier 481988's. These stronger blocks were used in the 220 hp W72 400 engines in 78, while the 180 hp L78 400 still used the 557 block. But, ALL 79's used the XX481988 block, since all 400's were W72's in 1979, until the last of the 400's ran out, around April or May of 1979.
