Today I...
« on: April 28, 2015, 02:13:44 PM »
A few other car forums I've been on have a thread like this, and I'm kind of surprised not to see one here.  More or less it's a thread for posting things you did to or for your car, and for those that don't have a project thread it's a good way of sharing what you're doing.  So here we go!

Today I(actually this last weekend) finally changed the leaky valve cover gaskets on my Firebird.  The previous owner thought slathering cork gaskets in silicone and then over tightening them was a good idea...  So of course a 10-20 minute job turned into an all day ordeal.  On the bright side I was welcomed by nice and clean engine internals and lots of new parts, so it's nice to know at least he was honest about the rebuild.

Finally fixed a tranny leak. Now I'll be able to drive it for more than ten minutes before I worry about it catching on fire.

Know how you feel, that's how it'd gotten with the valve covers.  At first it wasn't so bad, but when it got to the point oil was smoking and popping on the exhaust I decided it might be time to go ahead and tackle it. :P  In the process I got a PCV system setup in lieu of a breather cap, so happy about that as well.

But I did get into an argument with the water company because they couldn't give me a definitive date on fixing the water main running to my house.

Came across a 58 Pontiac Chieftain, removed the rear for the previous owner, listed it for sale. Drove the TA to a local car show Saturday with the t-tops off and no A/C while thinking of Box

Having too many doors made it an easy choice for me. :P  I have enough things to do with the Firebird anyhow.

At the moment thinking about repainting the Rally II rims and polishing out the beauty rings.  The previous owner painted them body colour and black, not too crazy about it.  Thinking do the rim itself solid gloss black and then the nicely polished beauty rings to set it off.  At least it'll look better than how it is now. :P

Yes and no.  The main INSIDE is leaking right before the shutoff valve.  Not a bad leak but it's there.  The main OUTSIDE has a physically broken shutoff valve, which means the water company couldn't even shut of my water so I could fix my own leak.

The situation has been resolved but I had to get loud with a few people to get things done.

So, lol, today I....  Went to work.  I'm still here lol.  Come on 4:30!

Nothing yet.  Just woke up 15 mins ago.  Had to call off because I'm STILL waiting on the water company to shut this EFFING valve off.

This BS will get fixed correctly today if I have to grab a shovel and a torch, myself!

Actually I've lived in PA (inspection state) and Alabama (non-inspection) Really no difference in the safety of the cars. They are in better shape down here because no snow and salt. I've never seen or heard of an accident down here due to an unsafe car. The inspection process isn't saving anyone, it's just another way for the state to take your money.

Don't forget your time.  Yep, but the flipside to that is there are laws for minimum tread wear, rotor thickness, etc... that if you were pulled over you could get a ticket for, that or in the event of an accident that was because of faulty equipment that plays into that as well.

Picked up the air cleaner assembly from a '79 350 C-10 for the Firebird. Suppose can use it to make a cowl induction or cold air setup. That or what I'd really like to do is find a shaker lid, cut a templated hole into my hood, and then make a functional shaker assembly.  Though from what I've read I'll need the relatively rare 305 lid to work, but if a 301/400/403 works and it's an issue of fitment I could live with that.  All I know is it's not liking the tiny open air element filter with the hood closed, so anything will be better really. Of course it has lots of surface rust, but nothing that can't be easily taken care of. I did notice the lid gasket that seals onto the base was in good shape/new so that's a bonus.

Here we just hand over money and proof of insurance and outside of that they don't care, it's great. :P

So I went to Wally-World and bought Rustoleum epoxy paint to refinish the Rally II rims and perhaps the air cleaner assembly, I suppose I know what my next project will be.  Also fuel is back up to $2.80 a gallon, which doesn't seem bad until you remember it only gets you 12 miles down the road.
