« on: October 04, 2014, 07:32:23 PM »
we just recently purchased a 76 50th anniversary TA and i was reading the PHS papers and the copy of the letter to the dealers about the package said it was to have gold lettered tires,i have never seen any of these.
so was that an option that never made it to production, just wondering.

Could it be the gold honeycombs?

The gold letter tires were originally planned as part of the 1976 LE package but never made it to production. You can read more about the history of the LE/SE model here:

Old topic, but a question regarding the birds on a '76 LE. Per the Bandit History link above, it says the window crank holes, header bird, and shifter knob were all gold. I remember reading in two other places that this occurred in the '77 and later models, but '76's still had red birds. (even though all the trim was gold for 50th).
Does anyone else have clarifying info? Thanks.

77 s.e. had the red arrow on the nose, I assume this is what you mean by the header bird. The window cranks covers and the shift knob were gold. 78 had a gold nose arrow. I think I read somewhere a factory memo regarding the gold lettered tires. I think they were discontinued before they were ever put into action but I may be wrong.

I speak from experience, The '76 LE had a gold bird emblem on the front header panel (it was the only "single-headlight" trans am that used a gold header panel bird).  There was a gold bird on the gold dash (I had a non-AC car).  My car had manual windows so I can't comment on the emblems for the window crank but it is my understanding that the window birds were the same emblem used for the dash except they were mounted on a plastic disk that filled the crank holes.  As far as the shifter knob, I had a 4-speed and the knob had the shift pattern on it same as any of the 4-speed cars.  The steering wheel had a gold bird so I suspect the auto shifter knob was gold too.

LE cars used a gold decal sail panel bird as opposed at all other 76's that had red metal bird emblems that were adhered to the sail panels.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Steve. I didn't think about the dash bird. Thanks for mentioning that. I guess I will go the gold bird route. Looks best in my opinion. I just didn't want a 'glaring error' staring me in the face.
Now can anyone tell me who makes the best repop emblems?

..update, I do not see anyone that repos a gold dash bird. Any ideas or places to find this? I have found all of the other ones.

It's my understanding that from the factory the dash bird piece was the same bird piece that was used for the window crank filler mechanically fastened to a flat plastic disk to fill the window ctrank hole.  Therefore you could start with a window crank piece and separate the two to get a dash bird.  I used to have some but I believe they went when I sold my car so I can't confirm this.  Not sure if the repop window fillers work the same way.

Here's an example of a dash emblem

Here's a power window emblem

note that they both have the same two posts on the back and use a clip retainer.

correct, they are the same bird emblem, just that the window emblem uses the backing plate as a complete but separate part. Not shown, the door bird uses a different retainer strap like those used on rear speaker insulation.

I have a dozen pictures of various '76 SE's that I have collected, and none of them have a gold (or red) bird on the dash. Where would it even go?
They all have gold birds on the door panels, and all but one has a red bird on the nose.
I have the red bird (loose) that came on my car, but cannot tell where it was mounted on the dash.

Look at the dash picture of the car in the link.  non-AC cars got an emblem on the dash next to the gages where vents are located on AC cars.  If your car has AC you don't need one.

Perfect! Mine has A/C, and the ones I have clear pictures of have A/C. Makes sense why I was not seeing the placement. Funny that I have two birds like that in the box of parts. They are not the door birds as I have those too. They have adhesive on them as if they were glued somewhere. They are about 1.5" (or so) across.
Thank you for the help, really appreciate it.

NP.  Are the birds metal?  If so, they are likely sail panel birds.  In '76 non-LE cars got adhered red metal bird emblems on the sail panels and LE's got a gold decal.
