301 Turbo guys step in please
« on: March 03, 2014, 09:30:10 AM »
Hi guys, I just recently picked up a '80 Turbo Trans Am WS6 and had a few questions.  I want to clean up the engine bay and detail some things up.  My question is what all needs removed to get the valve covers off both sides of this engine?  Looking at the passenger side it almost looks like the turbo/down pipe has to come off because the clearance is next to nothing but it looks like it "might" be possible without doing this.  Next is the driver side.. that's gonna be fun as I can see a ton has to be removed.  Any hints, tips or ideas on how to make this job as easy and painless as possible?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome! I think I read over at the 301 garage that it was possible to remove the passenger side without removing the turbo. Sorry but can't remember the details. Post a pic of your ride. My first car was an 80 fiero bronze formula. Great color.

I need to take the covers off my 301T as well , Would be sure great if its possible to take the covers off without removing any extra parts but luckily the motor is out of the car at the moment so that would help some .
i am too curious if its possible to do this job easily

Driver's side not going to happen unless you remove turbo system or at least the carb intake. Its not too hard. 3 bolts for turbo to intake, fuel feed line, turbo oil line and EGR and some vacuum hoses.

Pass side requires rotating a/c away and turbo feed pipe. Downpipe will move out of the way enough. May need to undo bracket holding exhaust to X member underneath.

Good thing is gaskets are under 20 for cork ones and while your there you can clean up that nasty intake rodents nest you find. Also replace any/all vac. hose that are deteriorated.

Have fun!!
