301 intake date code...Help
« on: October 05, 2013, 04:25:26 PM »
By the thermostat there is a small circle with cross-hatch lines through it followed by a capital P between the fake slotted screws.I understand this is where the date code is supposed to be.It is a 10000518 4-barrel intake manifold.I have located all the other numbers and date codes but this one stumps me.Any clues?Thanks

 Can you take a pic for me?

 P probably stands for Pontiac plant as in located in Pontiac, MI which is where
the Pontiac engine foundry and engine were located.

 Usually its a Julian date sometimes combined with the last year of the model year.

 It is normal that a date code will be many weeks in advance of the car's assembly.

Yes on the #1 runner on the drivers side of thermostat there is a a symbol or circle with 6 lines running through it and a Capital P by it in between the cast {screws} where there should be a date code

 Actually cylinder number 1 and number 3 share that runner.

 I can't go look for a few days, but I did find a pic I had taken a while back
for another purpose.

 That area was for foundry use, it was a area that could reflect whatever
they wanted. Generally they could indicate Day shift, Night shift and/or
a clock mark for more info.

 Since they inspected every so many, all they needed was a way to identify
what batch they are part of.

 When I get back I'll go look closer at the one I have in the pic.

Thanks and see if yours had the same markings by the thermostat housing or if you can find a date code anywhere.

 Ok, here's a manifold that I have...

 Perhaps this will help to understand what you have.

J288

 Decodes to:

J  = October
28 = 28th of month
8  = 1978

A = January
B = Febuary
C = March
D = April
E = May
F = June
G = July
H = August
I = September
J = October

 Which means that it was made for the 1979 Model year.

 I see. Well, for some reason your casting was either special in some way, or the foundry
folks didn't set the date coder.

 The "P" is normally where the month ident is, but that seems to exceed the calendar
year. "P" is also used in other places to denote the Pontiac home plant, which too
is odd. To my knowledge, the Pontiac home plant was the foundry/engine plant for
Pontiac engines. So, noting that isn't significant.

 And there's no chance it's another letter right? Sometimes with rust and crud they
can be less than perfect. Did you get a picture yet?

 In guessing, it might have been a "proof" and it came out perfect so they used it.

 With a picture I could maybe ask some contacts that do not frequent the forums.

 I do know they wasted very little, if it was flawed it got melted down and recast,
if it was good - it got used.
