Been coming for 15 years as a spectator. Usually a day trip from Lou. for me. Drive up, make my rounds, drive home. Finally went to Tipp a couple of years ago, and was hooked. Felt like I was more of a part of the show parking my 94 along side the other cars. I will be there in 2014. Actually plan on staying the weekend and showing (maybe the GT) for the first time. Reading the other thread about this years Nats and what the show needs or why it is down is tough. It was obvious when I pulled in sunday morning the numbers were off. I was unaware of the school issues, but as I left the HPP booth and was walking by the camaro/trans am conversions, I heard a guy getting a little upset, say something along the lines of "If you call the police you will be just hurting the show....."  Somebody wasnt happy.
I think it is simple. More people, more cars, more vendors, more fun....Just like anything. When you have a bad experience at a restaurant, you dont tell friends "it was great, you have to go." Word of mouth. I tell everybody about it.
The fine fella that started this thread is part of one of my first positive experiences at the show. Years ago I talked to Paul for the first time while I was admiring his SE. I asked about the gold bird fuel door for mine and he said "I have one, I'll send it to ya". I thought sure you will. A week or so later it showed up on my doorstep. Its still on the 81.
I remember the California dude "Crawford" and "King" in that same scene with Chris in Platoon

King: March, man, in Tennessee. Sniff the pines, sniff that cross-mounted  down by the river. Whoo, hot darn! Hey, Taylor, how long you got left? Three hundred and what?

Chris Taylor: Thirty-two. Three hundred and thirty-two days.

King: Xin loi, my boy!

Crawford: I can't even remember when I was 332, man. You gotta, like, count backwards or something. You know, like, you got 40 days in. I mean, think positive, dude.

Thats me- counting backwards till next years show. Three - fifty- what.........

Wow! I had forgotten about that fuel door! It was on my gold custom 79 T/A. It was the gold bird door correct for the 81 SE. I remember you saying they were near impossible to find. I'm glad to see it go where it belonged than on my car. Lets catch up next August!

well.

I think now is the time to start hatching a plan for next year.

I have a big mouth, lol. if we come up with a plan over the next 60 to 90 days, we should be able to get an idea of whom would possibly participate.

I don't know about the legality of it there, but I know we have a very large cruise night here that does "Drive In Night" during the fall and I've not heard of any complaints or problems from the city.  I think they use an inflatable screen.  That would be great idea to try.  A friday night screening of S&TB or Hooper or even Cannonball Run would be pretty cool to see.

I have thought about doing a 'Drive In' theme at the Nats for years.   Wish I had a stacker trailer and a nice projector, I'd be all over it,  Then have people drive a few cars to the area and have every one bring in a chair and show Smokey and Bandit, and another movie with a TA in it.
Hooper, McQ,  Thunder Bolt and Lightfoot,  or Vanishing Point.

Back in 2007-2008 TAC and 78ta/Ohio Firebirds joined forces and made the Friday night at the Nats, an awards night. Various goofy awards were given out by each club to members picked ahead of time that we knew would be there. Stuff like, funniest post, most posts, most helpfull member on the boards, ect. We used a spare room at the Drury to do it. In 2006, most of the TAC members were staying at the Fairfield Inn, when the show was at the airport. We took a bedsheet, made a screen out of it and showed Smokey and the Bandit on it out by the pool. It was mostly a TAC event, but we invited Brett and Hammer over from 78ta. They had a good time hanging out with us and the plan was hatched to combine members for a party next year.

Oh yes the memories...I still have the Best Seat Cover award stashed somewhere!!  And while in the Drury lot, I found out while trying to find my build sheet that three grown men can fit in the back of a 78 Firebird!!  Unfortunately we never found the sheet and it took forever to get the seatback reinstalled.

As far as next year, I am going to try to get both our Birds back down there.  Been a couple years since the wife and I took them.

There were cars vandalized at the Fairfield the last night of the Nats and the hotel washed its hands of any responsibilty. We moved to the Drury in 2007 after that and had two awsome years there. The hotel parking lot was a mini nats in itself with 70-80 Trans Ams of all gens there. The hotel offered to have security if we split the cost with them, we collected dontations from members and we did split the cost. Those were some fun times that I doubt can ever be recreated again. Time moves on, people drift apart, things change. But for two awsome years, it was right up there with Tipp City on the back parking lot at the Drury Inn.
I keep my trophy you gave my wife and I for "farthest traveled pushing a baby stroller" on my desk, those were great times.

My "Best Rebound" award is on my desk as well. Those nights at the Drury were awesome! My wife & I weren't able to make it this year but I am working towards 2014. We'll have a third member by then so that may be challenging... Not sure I can bring the '78 as she's in pretty tough shape and unless I get a new tranny & rear end fuel will be the killer. All that being said, I'll do my best to make another rebound.  Very Happy

If there are changes coming of any kind, then it's the clubs decision to announce what they are. Speculation and rumors only fan the flames and piss people off. They've run a show for 29 years, and done a nice job of it. Changes? Right now, if there are, it's an internal and a club issue, not a TAC issue. Rumors start fires and tend to run rampant, it won't be tolorated here. We're headed into what we mod's call ,the 'silly season'. Cars are put up for the winter, and the keyboard takes over on those cold days. Anything regarding the Nats, good, bad, changes, no changes, will be announced by the Dayton Chapter, when THEY decide to say anything, if it needs saying at all. Give 'em some space and some respect, if it's needed.

I agree with all of the above.  I was just hoping any winds of change will be on the positive side as the Nationals have been a great venue and will just get better. Very Happy

No problem and you're welcome. Yall have busted your humps on that weekend so we can show up and play. Whatever's going on, or not going on, can wait. You put on a show, we're going do our damndest to show up and support it. Any posts regarding the NATS, always generate a lot of passion for the event. Face it, like it or not most of us look forward to that event in Dayton as our superbowl of Trans Am only events. I pissed off the show owner of another Firebird car show when I said thier show was practice for the Nats. Was I wrong, yes, it was a heat of the moment, dumb thing to say. But, it just shows that most of us get up for that event in Ohio each year.
