What stands out as "not factory" for me is, besides the window crank handles, is the 160MPH speedo.
And I've NEVER seen pin striping like that on a shaker before either.

There seem to be a few things about this car that don't add up.   That build sheet would really help clear things up.

SWEET!  Nice score.

Of course now that you know that you've got something special there, are you sure that you really want to sell it ?

I'm glad it turned out to be a true Y84 car.  Very nice find.  If the ebay sale doesn't meet your reserve, you may try contacting Trans Am Specialties in Florida.  I know he buys lots of SE Trans Am's and yours doesn't look like it would need too much work to make it really nice.

I recently posted in Trans am Country about my brother's 1979 Pontiac Trans Am, and this thread shows its original build sheet. I am still searching for this car. It was truely one of a kind. I have several photos taken the day he purchased it and sometime in the future I will attempt to scan them and post.

just joined the site and saw this thread.  I see its been a while since anyone posted but I thought I would add this one to the count.  I just sold it a few weeks ago.  I had owned it for around 20 years.    it is a y84 hardtop with the 301 4speed.  pretty rare.  never did get an exact count but fred simmons told me years ago that he thought it was one of 20 made.
I will add a picture of it if someone will tell me how to do it.  sorry im old and a little slow on computer stuff.

Recently purchased a 79 TA that has been sitting for 29 years. Build sheet on top of the fuel tank confirmed it's a Y84 SPECIAL EDITION W/ TTOP DELETE  and so do the PHS documents I have purchased. Just wanted to post another one has been found.

No not the one from Wyoming. This one is from south Texas, been sitting since late 1988 when it was parked for some cosmetic damage that never got fixed. Clean solid one owner car, currently in the process of restoring it. I'll try and get some more pictures up!

Just purchased a 1979 Y84 301 4 speed.  South Minnesota barn find, 70,000 mile 2 owner car.  Very Low options with just 7" alloys, AM/FM stereo cassette and Y84 at a listed price of $674 (PHS in hand), standard camel tan interior, 3.08 posi rear end.

Have been fortunate to own a 1977 Y81 W72 auto and a 1979 Y84 W72 4 speed in the past.

This one is like a combination of the two, unfortunately no W72.

I didn't hear anyone say engine swap. But I swear I heard someone say something about numbers and matches. The guy who ordered that car must have been on a helluva budget, that has to be the cheapest SE in existence.

I'm more interested in what looks like a '96-97 hardtop WS6 Formula(even if it is red), but maybe that's just me.  Also judging by the silver '70-73? base/Esprit I guess the owner must be like me and HATE T-tops.

The Y84 has its born with drive train, and I'll retain it, but plan to build an XX block 400 in the future to improve performance.  For now my focus is on cleaning it up and deferred maintenance.  Hit a snag while trying to service the rear diff and replace the axle bearings, broke the cross pin retainer bolt....

I'm definitely a hard top guy.  Don't hate T-tops, but didn't enjoy the squeaks, rattles and leaks etc.  I think the hard tops can be made to handle better, are relatively quiet and trouble free.

The Red car is a LT4 Firehawk, with a UMI suspension.

The Silver car is a two owner '72 Esprit 350/3 speed manual car, 68,000 miles, with Global West suspension.  The 455 HO in the picture is going into the '72 along with a Tremec 6 speed.

Indeed, nice collection.  You must really like F-bodies to own three with two being of the same generation.  Also is it safe to assume the Firehawk is also a 6-speed given that the rest are also manual?

I love the 2nd Gens.  To me the 1970-73 Firebirds rank among the best designs to come out of GM.

The Firehawk virtually found me, and I had to buy it after doing some research on the LT4's.  Truly eye opening performance and handling.  Not crazy about the quality of the interior though.  They only built them with the T56 6 speed.

The '79 T-top delete SE was a crime of opportunity.  I've been looking for a clean '71-72 Lemans convertible (inspired by 737driver) or a 73-75 Grand Am (really tough to find 4 speeds).  The car came up in a search, and the pictures showed it to be clean but neglected. Liked the 4 speed, the few options and the originality of it. I initially thought it was just another SE clone, but some of the details led me to believe it was the real thing after reading this thread and a coupe of other sources.  Then the PHS arrived last Saturday and confirmed it.  I'm warming up to it because it truly is a cross between a Y81 I owned in the late '70's and a Y84 I owned in the early '90's (regret selling those two).

For me firebirds are performance cars, and a manual transmission is a necessity.

That's right for the LT-4 ones it was manual only wasn't it(seen too many "LT-4" auto hack jobs I suppose), but with the LT-1 or LS1 you could get an automatic.  Why I don't know, but you could.  The interior of the fourth gen isn't that bad for the time given the price point, the only part that's REALLY BAD is the dashboard.  That and I guess if you have the (p)leather seats, but the cloth in my '96 is quite nice.  Isn't much worse than my NA6 Miata, but is a few notches below my 6th gen Celica.  I want a manual in everything, so I can relate.
