I have a 79 t/a that im parting out. There was no tag on the rear end so I pulled the rear diff cover and it is a posi rear end but I am not sure how to tell the gear ratio. Is there a way to decipher the numbers on the gears? Thanx!

Count the teeth on the crown gear ( big one ) and divide it by the # of teeth on the pinion gear ( small one ) this will give you the ratio of the rear end.

Hope this helps !

Well, if you pulled the cover you can count the teeth on the gears, but some times the # of teeth is stamped on the outer edge of the crown gear, so if you rotate the the crown gear you may be able to find it.
