1980 Trans Am makeover
« on: May 03, 2012, 08:55:12 AM »
I decided to go ahead and post my progress on my t/a. With the help of wolfbandit30 and muscle from solargold, my car is finally starting to come together. The car is originally an 80 turbo trans am. After days and days of fiddling with the motor and unsuccessfully locating parts, I bit the bullet and began searching for an engine. I purchased a 75 pontiac 400 from a guy who was restoring a 77 trans am for his daughter. She wanted to do an ls swap on her car and said the 400 was too weak for her liking.   Anywho, here are some pics of the car and new motor and a few pics from the exhaust shop.

here is a pic before I pulled the turbo motor...had no room in the garage due to prepping another car for paint so I did it in the yard

here is the 301T that was in the car

after a few hours of muscling the car around with wolfbandit30. here it is out....whew

here's the trans

Here's the 400 I bought for next to nothing

here's the engine on it's way to it's new home

Inside of car after teardown

Motor and trans cleaned up for test run

here's the donor car that solargold and I stripped

Yesterday at the exhaust shop. I had an x-pipe installed with hooker comp. headers and some retro Golden T
urbo mufflers

I attempted to fix the a/c yesterday as far as the heater blowing, but was unsuccessful. everything seems to be hooked up correctly

Here's a short clip of the exhaust being welded

It still is as far as the vin goes. Had no luck selling the car plus the issue with having too many projects came up and I had to choose between this one and a 78. The 78 needs extensive work and my foot that's bored 0.60 over is getting the jitters.

That's along the line of what I was thinking. I want to put 1 inch coilovers in the fromt and a heidt's 4-link in the rear in July and was thinking of running 225/45/17's when that's done.

Hey Joe, there's maybe some torn newspaper left in that parts car. I stripped alot of parts from it including the wires, dash, etc. The original 301 and trans were there but it's all gone on the inside. Not worth the trip. I grabbed the nose(no grilles tho).

Figured I'd updae this thread a bit. Here are a few pics of the car during paint. It's sitting in my driveway baking(lol). I'm on vacation in Florida at the moment so I'll post some pics of it as it sits monday. The only complaint that i had was him not taping off the exhaust pipes. I took a shop towel and some paint thinner and they look brand new.

Here's the car in epoxy primer prior to having a few dents fixed.
I scrapped the passenger side fender after seeing it was not what I wanted on there at the time and went back with the factory one that came on the car. Saving the scrapped fender for my 78 which is getting the floors and quarters done.

Those plug wires are going to be in the way later.  If you bought a set made for a 400 there are specific wires for each plug run down the outside of the valvecovers.  That engine looks fantastic!
