79' TA with a 455 olds need headers that fit the TA body
« on: April 19, 2012, 11:24:06 AM »
I have a 1979 pontiac Trans Am that I recently pulled the original 403 out and my husband and I built a 455 olds for it. Problem is the 403 headers are too short with that wider stance for the 455 they hit the floor board and leave me with over an inch too far from the heads. I saw a response to this problem about using A body exhaust from and oldsmobile cutlass or so with a 455. Does anyone know if that will work or if I'm gona be looking at some stubbies with an exhaust dump to get it hooked to my exhaust for when I wana drive it on the road instead of just racing it?

Welcome to TAC!  I am going to move this over to the mechanical section.  There should be several guys here that run Olds 455.

Headers for a 68-72 cutlass with a 455 Olds will work.  The fit is perfect.

I've had the same combo with an Olds 455 in a 79' T/A with headers. the Cutlas headers work, but if you ever have to replace exhaust gaskets, you will have to take out the motor mount bolts and lift the engine, specially on the drivers side. The header will ride within a .25 of an inch from the steering arm, leaving no room at all to take bolts out or to even get to some.

I used Hooker Headers 3902HKR needed to dimple one of the tubes on the passenger side, but overall they fit fine.

I fnd some olds 70 headers. but when trying to get them in found that the driver side butts up against my tranny pan and shifter linkage. Did anyone have this problem and what did u do to fix it. I am hoping to make this work but am also concerned about the header dump being so close to the tranny pan won't it make that hotter?

I know this thread is way dead.... but I'm bringing it back up because I found it during my search about replacing my 403 in my 1979 Trans Am with an Olds 455. I see a few people in this thread did the same exact swap and used the 403 mounts and mount location, just as I'm looking to do. The answer I'm trying to find is, will it work with the factory AC/Heater Box without modification? I've seen some mention they removed theirs, but others say it is a bit tight, but the valve cover cleared it fine. I already have the smaller 4-wheel disc brake booster and 68-72 cutlass 455 headers. Thank You

The details of putting a tall block Olds engine in a TA comes up here from time to time.  In the last thread, I asked if anyone had one and no one responded.  Of course, this does not mean there isn't one or it can't be done.

I have heard the 425 and 455 Olds are supposed to be stronger blocks than the 403.  But the fact that they are taller
brings up the clearance issues you have mentioned.  The hood scoop would also be a concern.  However if the clearance could
be worked out, the Olds blocks would be a great upgrade alternative for 403 owners.

You could also consider a Pontiac 455.  There are no issues with fitment and parts as the 400 and 455 are the same size.
There are also more performance parts available and at a lower cost.
