Getting my 73 TransAm back on the road after too many years sitting idle in the garage. My question is - what is everyone else using for their gas? I used to just get the hi-test, but now that it has ethanol, are you adding something extra?

If you haven't already, you'll want to rebuild your carburetor and replace all your fuel lines with modern materials.  The ethanol  will degrade the old hoses, float valves, etc.

Really didn't want to do that. Found an additive that claims to remove the ethanol. Anyone have any idea if it works?

With the price of fuel these days, I prefer to not have to buy something else to add to it.  Nor have to make sure I always have some on hand.  I prefer that the fuel system just be conditioned to withstand the abuse our "modern" fuel dishes out.  That's just my opinion.

Probably right. I just stopped by the local NAPA store and saw how much it's gonna cost to add something for the ethanol, and something else for the lead. But then if I were really worried about how much each trip were going to cost me, I wouldn't be driving this!

I use a blend of gas and E85 in all my other cars.  The car I'm building now, I'm setting up to run E85 or straight ethanol.  I MIGHT set up a spare carburetor to use gasoline in case I go on a road trip somewhere and can't find ethanol.  I already have to put additives in my diesel to make up for the crappy diesel fuel these days, so I prefer to not have to do the same thing with my other vehicles.  Each to their own. I just run it as is.  In storage I put some Stabil and that's about it.

I think you're better off staying away from auto store additives. I'd run whatever octane the engine demands (if it pings on 93 then try mixing some race gas or av gas with regular). However, if you're below 10:1 compression on iron heads with reasonable timing you should be able to run 93 no problem. Also, your cam will affect cranking compression which is also a factor in octane demand.

Are there 'kits' for doing this....or any good links on info for what all to replace with what?

TIA,

X 2.  All of the gas here has 10% ethanol and I have 93 available so that is what I use.  My heads have hardened seats so I am good with unleaded.  That being said, my wideband has my car running best around 11.8:1 AFR.  As such, I suspect that the fuel I am getting has more than 10% ethanol in it already.
