Formula air cleaner -olds
« on: July 05, 2008, 10:35:21 PM »
Ok here's a question that the TA boys wouldn't touch recently, would the Olds air cleaner have a matching offset lid and should it be the complete 17" cover or just for the filter of around 14" or so?
thanks

if its a factory Olds powered formula..(77,78.79)..It should have a completely closed aircleaner(except for the snorkel of course) due to noise restrictions. the TA's with the 14 inch lids on the 17 inch bases still were considered sealed because the shakers didnt open to outside air.
Better to burn out than fade away?...I say...lets get lit.....In a past life...I was refered to as Bluesilver....he he ..i said refer

ok Thanks for that. Back to the original question I'm assuming they are also an offset lid but don't recall seeing one, most pics of olds engines in a Firebird have a shaker scoop on top. So anyone have a pic of a non-TA firebird with olds 350/403 showing original air cleaner?
thanks

Most if not all "closed" air cleaners have some kind of offset. Whether the offset is
to the front, rear, slightly left or right, and also depth. Most carbs don't sit perfectly
centered. This is the reason for all the different Shaker assemblies for the T/A......
400, olds 403, 301, 305, etc, each one is different. You could probably go on a
search for a regular Olds site, and find a correct 350/403 air cleaner with the correct
offset, etc. When Pontiac recieved emmisions certification for each engine, it was
basically "air-cleaner" to "oil-pan" from whichever division it was from, olds-chevy-etc....
You'd probably have better luck that route than searching for a actual "olds 403
Formula" air cleaner.
Still looking for some olds engine/air cleaner shots, but, hope that helps.....

Ok finally found a good aircleaner pic of a non-TA olds lid from a 77 Formula. This one is actually a 350 olds, 403 'should' be identical. The lid looks plasticy but should be metal, prob just the paint finish. You can see the large offset in these pics well, now to find one!

No doubt a California only option, the smaller olds motor. Also turns out that the lid shown is standard on 75-79 Olds engines that have a quadrajet and not firebird specific like the rest of the setup.
