71 Formula
« on: October 25, 2011, 10:09:35 AM »
Hey everyone. My name is Ben and. I am restoring a 71 Formula. It was an original silver car. It was a 350, 4 speed, and 3.42 car. I have the original 350 for the car, but not gonna use it. Came across a better setup. Power steering and power brakes and no a/c. Just a little over 39,000 miles on it. I haven't sent off for phs yet, so don't know everything about the car. The second owner tells me that it was a pretty fast car. Someone also put ttops in it before he got it. Those will be gone. I'll post pics as I go through the car. On that note. How do I do that?

Sounds like a great car.
photobucket.com  is my favourite site for hosting pics...its free, and you can host lots of pics on there.
Just go to the site and follow the directions to sign up....hint, use the "bulk uploader" for pics..its quicker.

Hi, Ben - welcome to TAC!  Your '71 sounds sweet.  I guess I'll have to do some homework - I thought '73 was the first year you could get a 350 in a Formula.  I have a '73 Formula 350 I'm currently tinkering with:

Got some pics. Someone painted it a brown color sometime ago. Most of the quarter panels was sheet metal rivited onto the car. Tail panel isn't not that bad, but at least they're making new ones.

Cool thing is that I have a 71 455 sitting at the house. What makes it even better is 71 H.O. heads and intake I have for the car. Just need the exhaust manifolds from ram air restorations and I'll be good to go.

Figure if I'm gonna restore the car. Might as well do it with the right stuff, because I can't or wouldn't be able to afford a real 455 H.O. car.

Got the subframe home the other day. Gotta repair the holes for the body bushings. Also got the new tail panel the other day too. Looks like its gonna be a good fit. Also got more pics of the car and what needs to be fixed.

Subframe is actually in great shape.

Here's the 3 holes that are bad.

The tailpanel. Hopefully it fits as good as it looks.

Here's some of the other pics of the car that needs repair.

What happened to the Hurst t-tops? I had some on my first Firebird, a 77 SE T/A, but think they look period correct on earlier Birds because they are smaller.

I feel the same way...I can have a nice car that looks like a Formula455 without having to pay for a 455HO car...which I can't afford anyway, lol.

The hurst ttops were an after market kit from someone like car concepts. I don't like ttops on the 2nd or 3rd gens. They leak too much. As for the tops themselves....one had a crack across it and there was bubbles in the other one. Course the 455 I'm putting together would probably twist the body with ttops in it.

A 455 in a 70-73 Firebird just seems like a very natural thing- mine is waiting for me at PPR, too bad I won't be able to pick it up until after New Years.
It's not like I'd even be able to build it when I pick it up- a customer brought back his 65 GTO and his 389 needs emergency surgery, so I'll be overhauling that before even touch my 455.

Are they making repro firewalls now?

Wish the braces that go from the trunk floor to the tail panel were reproduced. The ones on the car are bad, so we gotta make some. The fun stuff. Making stuff. Here's the worst part. I was on my way home from Tennessee towing a friend on mines 74 ta to Florida and my 455HO heads when the trans decided to quit on me. Clutches let go. Luckily the trans is still under warrany, but I gotta get it back to Florida. It was a built 4l65.

Yea. It's got a cooler on it. The one they sent with the trans. I think this time I'm gonna put a bigger one on there. See how that goes. Whats weird to me is the pcm on the truck didn't say anything about over heating AMD go into limp mode to cool the trans.

Yea. I looked at the converter and its not blued, so I think the clutches gave out. Less then 12k on it.

At least my car is moving along. He likes how well the tail panel and the inner tail panel(the metal ones) fit. He wishes they'd make more panels that fit like these. Just about everything lined up without much effort.

If it gets cold where you live, another guy on Performance Years was having trouble with his car between the time the electric choke pulled off, and full engine warm up....was getting fuel drop out due to the cold and not having the exhaust crossover fitted (same manifold you're running)....just a thought if you do winter driving.
