new GTO to retro Chevelle
« on: February 20, 2012, 04:32:18 PM »
I was surfing the net and came across this.  I kinda like it.

I wouldn't necessarily call this a "failure".  Of course there is a lrge contingent here that think it's blasphemous to make a Camaro look like a T/A.  Here's a backatcha tot he Chevy guys.

Original car was too rounded to put that square back end on it. and that front is just horrid.

The Camaro turned into a Firebird and now the GTO turned into a Chevelle. Can it get any uglier? Next we are going to see the 2013 Dart made into a Superbird.

This is getting silly.

Doesn't anyone in the business have access to automotive history books, preferably with pictures? Why are they bending over backwards trying to "wrap" a certain body style around new (and completely different in every way) chassis? A chassis that was never intended to accomodate such a body style?

What is wrong with clean break styling? (except when you've got inept designers, but that's another story for another thread). Has anyone ever compared a 1968 GTO with a 1964? Or a '73 with a '71? How similar is my 1987 GTA to my 1978 T/A? Do I have trouble distinguishing between my 1998 Ram Air and a 1969 Firebird?

Sometimes you have a styling hit, sometimes you have a model that takes a bit of time to hook people. The important thing is to keep the DNA strong. I for one would love to see a properly-styled original looking Chevelle built on a proper performance platform. Sure it would be "cool" to have a few historical cues to link the different gens together, but the current custom car scene is just getting ridiculous in my personal opinion.

I have nothing against the retro cars currently on the market. The new Stangs are nice... but I'll tell you, I'll take a new distinctively styled Shelby GT500 over a regular model anyday, even if it DOESN'T look like a '69 Shelby GT500. Make a car good enough and it will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the classics, destined itself to be a classic, even if it's not a caricature of the original.

has a bit of "down under" feel to it, and the rear wheels look too small

Agreed... for a moment, one of the front offset photos reminded me of a 70s Falcon rump. But from any other angle the proportions are just bizarre.

With some changed details (ie. NOT trying to look like a Chevelle), it could probably make for a successful showcar and might have even been adapted to production status, had it been made by GM.

 Reminds me of a mid 1980's Renault at first glance rather than a Chevelle....

Car was built years ago for a magazine....it was ugly when they did it, its still ugly now.
Throwing a couple of styling cues from one car onto another of a completely different shape is a recipe for just this kind of disaster.  :???:

Do you think at some point in the build they realized how awful it was going to be but were so far along they had to finish it???

Yes, back in 2004/2005, I think Hot Rod was the magazine behind the concept.

Wow... That is bad.  Really bad.

I always say that even if you don't agree with the theme you have to admire the craftsmanship....but I may make an exception to that rule in this case... :-?  Ill-concieved and poorly executed....
