Help! My Trim Tag is for a Base Firebird!
« on: February 05, 2011, 12:04:58 PM »
2nd Gen Trans Ams, Formulas, and Esprits are usually (if not always) that way.  So nothing to worry about.

Thought this out to be a sticky.

Great thinking Joe. I think we see one of these questions every week or so don't we?

Part 2:
Help! The VIN # on my Trim Tag Doesn't Match the VIN on the Dash!

It's okay, that's just a body number.  It appears on the build sheet, but it's not part of the VIN.

2nd Gen Trans Ams, Formulas, and Esprits are usually (if not always) that way.  So nothing to worry about.

This is the case with Norwood cars. Van Nuys cars have matching series ID between trim tag and vin.

My 1981 Van Nuys built Trans Am does not have matching series ID between the trim tag and vin.

The bodies were built before any production orders were made, so they didn't know if the body would end up a Firebird, Esprit, Formula, or Trans Am. Once the production order was made, then a VIN was assigned to that body.

I didnt finish my thought, lol.  I should have said every 70 and 71 model Ive seen is this way- all Norwood cars are 22387 on the tag...and the Van Nuys cars series ID on the trim tag matches the vin.  81 was a different VIN altogether, wasnt it? Coding changes, and also the check digit was added?

Yes, 1981 was the first year for the 17 digit VIN.

Thank you, this just answered one of my questions.
