Posted this in the "Numbers Crunching" section, and got no reply. Then I realized that if anyone would be able to answer my question, it would be you guys !
I'm trying to determine if my carb is correct for a 78 T/A, W72 WC, 4 speed with 3:42 rear.
#'s on the carb are:
17057266
1367 AZM
I've deciphered this to be a 1977 application year, Federal, Pontiac, and manual trans. Built 136 day of 1977.
The last 3 letters, I don't know ?
I got this information from Cliff Ruggles book " Rochester Quadrajets". Interestingly, one of the pictures they use in the "Carburetor Numbering" section, is of a carb with exactly the same numbers as mine, except that the build date is the 348 day of 1976.
Anyway, my question is, is this carb correct for my 1978 setup ?

Any chance yours is an early model 78 using a left over 77 carb? What is your build date? Are the last 6 of your VIN close to 100001?

if it was a 78 carb built in 77, it would have the 78 #'s with the 77 build date.

Last 6 #'s of the VIN are 165193, so, it's a 77. But I guess the real question is, are there any preformance differences between the 77, 7266 carb and the 78, 8266 ?

A 4 speed car carb would have ended in a odd number (263) not a even one (266).

A manual carb and a automatic carb are slightly different externally for the manual shift setup. I didn't notice earlier that your car was a manual. There is no performance difference between a 77 and a 78 automatic carb, but you should get a manual carb for your 4-speed setup. There is one for sale here: http://transamcountry.com/community/index.php?topic=40377.0

other then the odd and even #'s, its the linkage on the side. the auto has the place for the TH350 kick down cable. 4 speed just has the place for the return spring. I dont know if there is any thing internal about them. if you want to sell yours let me know , needing a 77 W72 for auto trans. I have a 78 W72 for auto trans I'll use till I find the 77 carb

As a matter of fact I would trade carbs with you, problem is that the carb is dismanteled, and I don't have all the parts. Guy I bought it off forgot to give me a box of parts that belong to the carb. He lives about 200 miles away and says he will drop them off within the next 2 weeks when he gets in my way ( he's a good guy, have dealt with him before ). The other problem is I live in Newfoundland, Canada, the most easterly point in North America. Depending on where you live, shipping could be costly, I know because I have ordered a lot of parts from the USA, and usually wind up costing me double the purchase price.

Beautiful job on the carb and intake, you wouldn't want to see a picture of mine.
As I stated before, I live in Newfoundland, Canada, an island of the east coast of North America, total population of the whole Province is 500,000 people. As a result, any kind of parts for these cars are very hard to find here. So, although this carb may not be the right year, and for an auto, it will work for my car. If I can find the right # carb for mine, I would gladly sell you this one.
If I do find the correct carb for my car, I will PM you.
