I am trying to figure out if there is anything special about this 400 I have. I was told it was a '68 but who knows.
Here is the code from the front: O529391 XH Casting: 9790071 Other numbers/letters: B149DN, 29T250081, 62 Heads, A371
All help is appreciated!

O529391 This is the sequential engine code or EUN engine unit # Casting: 9790071 Other numbers/letters: B149DN B = Feb, 14 =14th day 9 is 1969 DN is for Day or night shift , 29T250081 Vin
Engine vin 2 (for Pontiac), the last digit of the year( 9 for 1969) and a letter for the assembly plant (I think T is Arlington Texas which makes sense since they produced B bodies) followed by the last 6 digits of the vehicle VIN.

All Pontiac engine will have a build date on the blocks. What is yours? It's back on the distribator pad. George

This is the number on the distributor pad: B149 DN with a arrow pointing to the N. The code on the front appears to be a XH.

XH would be a 68 or 69 B body. The arrow pointing to the N means it was made during the night shift. It is probably a 69

Thanks for your help. I guess the XH from a '69 is about 350hp? The 62 on the heads would indicate it's 366hp?

The 62 heads were "big car" heads. 2.11 1.77 valves. Yes, HP is advertised at 350 I think. At 72 CC I do not know how pump gas friendly they would be as compression would be 10 to 1 or so.

B149 is as follows. A= January B=February The next two digits are the day of the month, in this case, the 14th. The last digit is the end of the year. So, 1969. Therefore, February 14, 1969 build for the block. Hope this helps, George

Key Engine ID stuff for Pontiacs
1. The two-digit code on the front tells you what the engine assembly was. However, Pontiac re-used these codes year after year, so it's not enough to have just the engine "code" 2. The date + the engine code tells you what the engine was exactly. The date code is cast into the block near the distributor hole. Next to the date code, there is a DN with a pointer for Day/Night 3. The number (about 6 digits) on the code pad doesn't mean anything 4. The casting number, on the block behind the passenger's side cylinder head, tells you what was cast. This number was nailed onto the casting buck. The casting bucks were used year after year, but they were NOT changed. 5. The VIN number is beside the crank pulley on the front of the engine. You'll have to crawl under to see it.
